In Russia this low tree (or bush) is widespread, having an ovoid crown and belonging to the Birch family. In our country, alder grows in vivo in the European part, in Western Siberia and the Caucasus.
Tree description
In height, an alder can sometimes reach fifteen meters, but more often it does not exceed ten meters. Young branches have a rare pubescence, sticky. The trunk is covered with smooth gray bark. The leaves are ovoid in shape; they are densely pubescent on both sides.
Flowers gather in earrings. Female flowers are short oval, usually 3-8 pieces per group, male flowers are sessile, longer, collected 3-5 pieces each. Single-seed nuts (fruits) are oblong cones. A tree blooms in March and April. Alder mating is ripening in autumn.
Species, places of growth
To date, forty-seven species of alder are known, twelve grow in our country. The most common are gray and black (sticky) alder. It perfectly develops on drained soils along the banks and in the valleys of rivers and lakes.
