History of occurrence

The historical roots of the important and long-awaited holiday for the Bryants go far back centuries. The exact date when the Svensk Fair took place for the first time (Bryansk), no one knows. The foundation for its appearance was laid by festive trade at the walls of the Svensky monastery. When the period of Troubles passed, the country began to revive after the devastation, and the advantageous position of Bryansk made it a shopping center. The authorities in those days strongly supported and controlled events related to trade. Here foreign merchants were allowed to trade in any products except tobacco and wine. The choice here was the widest. Lithuanian merchants put up for sale all kinds of clothes, vessels of various metals, leather, livestock, and lard. Eastern merchants traded furs and Volga fish, while northern merchants traded metal, wood, and canvas. Turkey and Crimea were sources of rice, cotton, kumach, and paper. Fabrics and dried fruits came to the fair from the West. By 1867, the Svensk Fair fell into disrepair due to the shift of the state’s border towards the West.

Overcoming a short way along the Desna, the icon in an unknown way disappeared from the boat and found itself on the banks of the Sven River. The prince came to this place and, having prayed, was healed. On this occasion, he ordered the construction of a monastery in the name of the Mother of God in this place.
