A.S. Pushkin, “The Poet and the Crowd”: An Analysis of the Poem

Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin “Poet and Crowd” wrote in 1828. This poem aroused very conflicting opinions in society; comments did not stop even after the death of the author. In his work, Pushkin quite sharply turns to his surroundings, calling him mob. Most literary critics agree that Alexander Sergeevich had in mind by no means ordinary people, but nobles, striking with spiritual poverty and the absence of any understanding of real work.

Pushkin poet and crowd
The poem "Poet and the crowd" was written by Pushkin shortly after the authorities tried to direct his pen in the right direction. Many contemporaries who knew the writer well argued that this work was a response to the requirements of didactic moralism, that is, Alexander Sergeyevich composed what was required of him, but these were not his thoughts and feelings. The wishes of the authorities were significantly different from the ideals of the poet himself. Until now, no one has understood who Pushkin called mob.

Knowing the poet’s mood and his attitude towards the nobility, many assumed that the phrase “high society” indicates a high officialdom. On the other hand, addiction to the "stove pot" can hardly be attributed to rich people. There is an assumption that in his poem he portrayed the Decembrists Pushkin. "The poet and the crowd" is an expression of utter disappointment with the events of December 14, 1825. The poem mentions that the mob is pacified by scourges, namely, for the Decembrists, dungeons and gallows were prepared.

If you look at the poem “The Poet and the Crowd” more broadly, it becomes clear that Alexander Sergeyevich by the mob meant people who did not think anything in great art. At the beginning of the XIX century, creative people were treated with some neglect, they were not assigned a significant role in society. The verses entertained the people, but their poems did not carry within themselves social significance. The "Song of the Poet" is beautiful, free, but at the same time barren like a wind. People did not understand the value of verses, they are trying to find a profit, a rational kernel, and not enjoy works of art.

In turn, Pushkin feels himself a wise prophet. “Poet and crowd” is an attempt to isolate oneself from the public, to show neglect of their principles and values. Alexander Sergeyevich was directly involved in the Decembrist uprising, but after the failure of the secret conspiracy he became disillusioned with everything and rethought his mission. He does not care about the arrogant people who do not understand him, but only taunts and amuses himself.

poet and crowd verse
Pushkin cannot knock people's hearts, break public consciousness . “Poet and crowd” is an expression of disgust for material values, because spirituality dies because of them. The author sees how the generation is degrading, everything beautiful is dying. The poor worry only about food, the rich are mired in debauchery, neither one nor the other cares about creativity. The poet is assigned the role of a court jester, and Pushkin is not satisfied with this. Therefore, he consciously renounces the world in which he lives, but does not give up his gift, because he hopes to arouse in people bright and noble feelings.
