Sergey Ostrovoy: biography of the poet
The Russian songwriter-poet was born on September 6, 1911 in the town of Novonikolaevsk (Siberian Territory), in the family of a housewife and a fur buyer who later became the owner of a small shop. Parents of the future writer were semi-literate and very critically perceived Sergei's passion for reading. There was not even a single book in the house. Such a rejection on the part of relatives forced the young man to read at night by candlelight, which irreparably affected his vision.
Sergey Ostrovoy survived the Civil War, at the time of which he was 7 years old. He remembered the change of white to red and red to white, as well as the epidemic of typhus, when countless dead bodies were taken away on the columns of sledges, like brushwood. These terrible memories left a deep mark in the receptive childhood memory.
In school years, he easily found a common language with classmates, published the first notes in the city newspaper. At the end of grade 9 at the age of 16, having quarreled with his father, he left home and got a job as a newspaper reporter in Tomsk.
Gradually gaining certain experience and knowledge, in 1931 he moved to the capital of Russian cities, Moscow, and in 1934 he was already a traveling correspondent for the all-union newspaper Gudok. In this capacity, the author traveled to almost half of the country, wrote a lot about people of various professions with whom he happened to meet.
Poplars poured
On an ongoing basis, Sergey Ostrovoy, whose biography inspires good human actions, began to be published in newspapers of the all-Union scale, starting in 1934. In 1935, the debut collection Guard of the Borders saw the light of day.
His poem "Poplars Poured" at the competition of the Komsomol song was awarded two prizes; composers Vladimir Fere and Nikolai Myaskovsky put the words to the music, and Sergey himself received a high monetary reward.
Suddenly fallen success inspired the young man so much that he decided to connect his life only with creativity. Lines emerging from the pen of an author were characterized by humanity; penetrating to the very depths of the soul, they warmed people. More than 10,000 response letters came to the poem “Mother”, published in the newspaper “Pravda”.
He fought with a word and a grenade
In the summer of 1941, Ostrovoy joined the front as a volunteer and went through the whole war with the rank of private. He fought not only with books, poems and newspaper notes, but also with the soldier’s usual weapon: an anti-tank bottle, a grenade and a rifle. With advanced units, he entered the liberated villages and cities of the Kalinin Region, which he often visited in the post-war period. In the summer of 1942, he was injured and treated in a hospital, in 1944 he released a book of military lyrics. Almost until the end of his days he published poetry in various publications.
About the village of Kryukovo
The song "At the village of Kryukovo" has its own interesting story. The author wanted to write a folk composition, the music of which, as if guessing his thoughts, was composed by M. Fradkin. When the finished work broke into the vastness of the country, it turned out that there were a huge number of villages with that name in the country, and each survived the military battles.
All books dedicated only to her
Sergey Ostrovoy was married to Nadezhda Nikolaevna Tolstoy - the famous harpist, Honored Artist of Russia, 12 years younger than him. This was the second marriage of Sergei Grigoryevich, who turned out to be very happy: the couple lived together for half a century, and the wife for Sergey Grigoryevich became a good guardian angel. The poet dedicated her books to her and only her.
Until the last days, Sergey Ostrovoy, whose biography, a photo of which is a vivid example of humanity and fortitude, led a healthy lifestyle, went in for sports and observed the daily routine. In the 1970s, he headed the Russian Tennis Federation, holding the post of its president. Moreover, the passion for tennis came quite late - at 50, and since then for almost 40 years, he visited the court three times a week. Also, the poet was very fond of skiing, he could spend about five hours on the track.
Sergei Grigoryevich Ostrovoy died on December 22, 2005. Creativity of the author, whose songs are heard every day on the air and from the TV screens, remains modern and relevant today - at the time of great shocks and even greater hopes.
