After the contract with the club from Dortmund expired, the talented footballer received an offer to move to Real Madrid. In Spain, Christophe's career declined. The reason for this is the highest competition from teammates and regular injuries. Metzelder’s playing time has been kept to a minimum. Over the course of three seasons in the Spanish League, the athlete appeared on the field only 23 times.

After a series of setbacks and a series of recurrent injuries, Christophe decided to return to Germany. The new place of work for the football player was the Schalke club, which is considered the sworn enemy of Borussia. However, the player quickly managed to cope with the dissatisfaction of the fans thanks to the excellent game.

As part of the “Schalke” Metzelder won the German Cup, and also reached the semifinals of the Champions League. However, the career revival for the player did not last long. Tired of dealing with permanent injuries, he announced farewell to football at the age of 32. Christophe returned to his native “Haltern”, having received the post of functionary of the club.
