Error 1068: Cannot start a child service or group

When working with the Windows operating system, users may encounter error 1068. This occurs due to the launch of one of the processes whose parameters do not specify autorun, and it does not start when the OS boots. Often when you try to turn on the sound, open a shared Internet connection or create a home group, the user sees the following message on the screen of his device: “Error 1068: Unable to start the child service or group.” If such a problem arises, you should not panic, because there are ways to solve it.

The first way: starting and restarting the necessary services

First of all, you need to run the “Services” utility. To do this, right-click on the icon "My Computer" and select the menu item "Management". After that, in the left part of the window, find the item “Services and Applications” and double-click with the left mouse button on the item “Services”.

Another way: using the Win + R keyboard shortcut, open the Run utility, type services.msc in the field and press Enter.

On the right side of the "Services" window is a list of all utility applications of the operating system, which can be sorted by name. Here you need to find the Telephony service, use the context menu to go to the properties where you need to assign it a manual start in the corresponding section, apply the changes and start it for execution. Then perform similar actions on:

- "Support for Plug and Play Self-Configuring Devices."

- “SSTP Service”.

- “Remote Access Auto Connection Manager.”

After starting, you should make sure that all the services you just started are working. Error 1068 should disappear. If not, you can use the following methods.

The second way: checking the rights of system folders

To check access levels to system folders, you need to go to the root of the disk with the operating system installed, find the Windows folder in it and, using the context menu, open its properties. When you open the "Groups and Users" section of the "Security" tab, you should make sure that all three groups of owners have full access rights. This can be seen in the lower column with rights, by selecting one of the groups above.

Having seen a group lacking full access, you need to provide it with it, marking the corresponding item in the changes section and applying the new settings. In order for the system to accept the changes, after granting access, you must restart the PC. If error 1068 (“cannot start the child service”) is still present, you must try to fix it using the third method.

Third Way: Checking Logfiles

Sometimes error 1068 can occur due to the Windows Event Collector service. If its operation fails, then the information collected ceases to be recorded in the Logfiles folder. To check its performance, you need to start Windows in safe mode. To do this, in the process of loading the system until its logo appears, you must press the F8 button on the keyboard and select the appropriate item.

After the OS starts, you need to find the Logfiles folder along the path C: \ Windows \ System32, rename it or move it to another place, and then restart the PC in normal operation mode. Error 1068 ("Cannot start the child service") should no longer appear. However, if this method did not work, then there is one more.

Fourth method: system recovery

Although this method does not always help to cope with error 1068, you can still try it. You need to run the “System Restore” utility using the search from the “Start” menu or by opening it from the system parameters and select a recovery point at which an error did not appear. After the system completes the rollback, the computer will restart.
