Asus, one of the most advanced notebook manufacturers, is trying to occupy all of the niche in demand, including the category of powerful consumer notebooks.
Market positioning
The observed "car" is located on the upper stage in the N53S line. Notebook Asus N53SM is positioned by the manufacturer as an ultimate multimedia solution that can take on tasks of any complexity. The computer will look advantageous both on the table of a professional photographer, and by an avid gamer who is not ready to put up with a low frame rate in games.
Equipment
Included with the laptop are: a charger for connecting to the mains, a battery, various waste paper and a warranty card for two years.
Case design
Since the laptop is part of the N53S line, its external design does not differ from that of other laptops in the series, which not everyone will like. The same unique, artsy design, built around a laptop cover mount, has survived. The computer chassis has an unusual angular bend, giving it a certain charm. The hole for removing excess heat complements the overall picture, resembling a radiator grille in its appearance. In general, it can be seen that Asus designers used the same moves that car designers use to try to give their product a solid look that compels us to draw analogies with heavy equipment.

The case is made of matte plastic, sufficiently strong, not collecting fingerprints, dust. Minor damage and scuffing are barely noticeable. The chassis of the laptop, despite the specific design, is credible, looks very reliable, the hinges that hold the display are strong. Under the hood, the Asus N53SM looks like any other laptop of the company, all the same painted aluminum around the keyboard.
Communications, camera and acoustics
The laptop is equipped with a classic set of wired interfaces. On the back of the laptop are: a Kensington key slot ("anti-theft" mechanism) and a charger socket. On the left side of the computer there was a place for an HDMI port, a standard Ethernet port, an SDHC card slot, and two second and third generation USB-A ports. On the right side, along with the DVD-drive, two second-generation USB-A ports, an audio input and an audio output, are huddled. Of the wireless interfaces, Wi-Fi is available, supporting b / n / g and Bluetooth frequencies.
A webcam with a resolution of 2 megapixels is installed above the display. This, of course, is not Full HD, but not VGA, which means that Skype will be enough for comfortable communication.
The trump card Asus N53SM this time was an advanced speaker system, produced in conjunction with Bang & Olufsen. These are powerful speakers that give your computer sound a special depth at low frequencies and crystal clear at high frequencies. In general, the sound is rich, bright, without obvious drawbacks, as on other similar laptops.
Keyboard and touchpad
Speaking of input tools, you should start with the keyboard. Actually, the keyboard is why this laptop is not suitable for office workers and journalists. In an attempt to create a convenient and quick tool for entering text, designers made a number of mistakes. The keys are very flimsy, unstable and located too close to each other, which will inevitably lead to a large number of typos in the text.
The touchpad is standard. A very small touchpad centered on a space. Metallic and quite smooth. Under it are two mechanical buttons, visually combined into one. To fully work with the touchpad, you need to install drivers specialized for Asus N53SM. Drivers can be downloaded on the official website of the manufacturer. Thanks to them, the touchpad will acquire support for multi-finger gestures, including scrolling and dragging.
Asus N53SM: specifications
For convenience, information is presented in tabular form.
Display | 15.6 inches, glossy, with a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels |
CPU | Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge, four cores, frequency up to 2200 megahertz |
RAM | 8 gigabytes DD3, module size 2 gigabytes. |
Built-in memory | 750 gigabytes, 5400 rpm |
Discrete graphics | Nvidia GeForce GT 630M, 2 gigabytes of video memory |
Battery | 6 cells, 5200 milliamps * hour |
Display
The screen is perhaps the main disappointment in this laptop. The problem is not even a cheap matrix and the absence of polarization layers, but a low resolution. 1366 by 768 pixels - not enough for comfortable work behind the display with such a resolution. The user will experience a clear lack of space. Scrolling web pages takes longer. It is almost impossible to arrange two windows parallel to each other, which will noticeably affect the productivity of the computer owner. The glossy finish aggravates the situation, completely killing black and creating problems when working in the sun.
Performance and memory (test results)
The hardware of the laptop is impressive. There is no configuration for the Asus N53SM Core i5. Therefore, the heart of the device was the Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge chip with a maximum acceleration of up to 2200 megahertz. The quad-core processor copes with complex tasks such as image processing in Photoshop. The processor is supplemented by a powerful video card - Nvidia GeForce 630M and 8 gigabytes of RAM.
- During the synthetic test wPrime laptop scored 9 points.
- During the PCMark benchmark, the laptop scored 2458 points.
- During the testing of graphic performance 3DMark11 laptop scored 1137 points.
Autonomy and temperature
In classical testing - brightness at the level of 70% and an active script that reloads a web page once a minute - the laptop worked for 5 hours. With an average load, the operating time from one charge decreases to 2-3 hours. When playing games, the operating time from one charge is reduced to 30 minutes.
Even at high load, the computer warmed up to room temperature and no more. The temperature above was observed in the cooler area, which is natural.

Asus N53SM: reviews
For the most part, laptop owners speak positively about the computer. People appreciated the quality hardware and the interesting design. But besides the obvious advantages, there are no less obvious disadvantages. The low resolution display for a premium laptop seemed to many an unacceptable error. Users of the device were unsatisfied with the low pixel density and small space for work. Scolding and hard drive. In an expensive laptop, I would like to see a modern solid-state drive instead of the classic "hard drive" with a base speed of rotation.
Instead of a conclusion
Asus was able to assemble a more or less balanced device, with a slight margin in favor of the exterior and processing power.
Pros:
- Great design.
- High-quality acoustics.
- Quiet operation coupled with low temperature.
Minuses:
- Low resolution.
- Slow hard drive.
