How did athletics develop in independent Belarus?

Alexander Lukashenko, the constant leader of the republic, told the athletes about the need for high indicative results and asked what measures he should take to achieve them. Since that time, the Belarusian Athletics Federation has begun its work actively.

The construction of new stadiums has begun, sports schools, educational institutions, advanced training centers are being opened, coaches are being motivated, funds are allocated for food, equipment and other needs. The birth of the Queen of Sports in Belarus

Athletics was born in Belarus back in 1913. It all started with a club of sports fans in the city of Gomel. The first college of physical education in Belarus was opened in 1930. Since that time, active training of personnel and athletes for worthy exits at international starts has begun. Even as part of the USSR team, Belarusian athletes began their starts with the 1954 Olympics in Helsinki and did not miss a single Olympic competition. During this time, athletes brought six gold, fifteen silver and thirteen bronze medals to the country's piggy bank. The first gold at the Olympics was received by Mikhail Krivonosov in hammer throwing. The most sensational victory, which modern athletics in Belarus is proud of, went to Yulia Nesterenko, who received Olympic gold at a distance of 100 meters (Athens, 2004).

After the collapse of the Union in 1991, the sovereign Track and Field Federation of Belarus became independent within the IAAF. Since 1993, athletes have already competed in international competitions with their independent team. Since that time, they have won 19 champion medals for the country (4-6-9).

As part of the USSR team, Belarusians won 46 medals (14-15-17) at the world championships in athletics. And the independent team of Belarus for the entire period since 1993 added another 10-14-12 medals to the piggy bank. He became the world champion three times in a row from 2003 to 2007. Speaking at the European Championships in Athletics, they got another 21 medals (7-8-6). And at the moment, 19 athletes represent the country at the European Indoor Championships (in Belgrade, 2017).
