Traveling to the Future: Mining Institute Metro Station

In St. Petersburg, in the 21st century, a fairly large and extensive network of urban subways operates. Many metro stations appeared in Soviet and post-Soviet times. One of the oldest stations is Vasileostrovskaya. This station provides delivery of people to the entire Vasilievsky Island - the largest island of the Neva Delta. From his heart long enough to get to his distant parts. So when will the metro station be opened at the Mining Institute? And does the city need this station?

Historical and cultural object of St. Petersburg

The Mining Institute, located far beyond the Blagoveshchensky Bridge, is located approximately at level 68 at Bolshoy Prospekt Vasilyevsky Island, on the embankment of Lieutenant Schmidt. And at the moment it is very difficult to get to it: from the metro station "Vasileostrovskaya" you have to travel for a long time by ground transport, mainly by minibuses.

But the Mining Institute is one of the oldest historical and cultural monuments of the Northern capital, which tourists from different cities of Russia and countries of the world come to Vasilievsky Island to enjoy. That is why it is very important how thoughtful and convenient the transport infrastructure will be around, which means that the construction of a metro station near the Mining Institute is very important.

The history of the institution dates back to the reign of Catherine the Great, who, continuing the work of Peter I in the field of training of domestic civil engineering personnel, issues a decree on the creation of a mining engineering school in St. Petersburg. For the new higher educational institution, the state bought two houses from Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetev on the corner of the 22nd line of Vasilievsky Island.

From the beginning to the 60s of the XIX century, the school was first reorganized into the Mountain Cadet Corps, and then into the Institute of the Mining Engineers Corps . And by 1811, Andrei Voronikhin’s masterpiece project, constructed in the then fashionable classicism style, was erected to his needs.

By 1818, the All-Russian Mineralogical Society already existed at the Mining Institute and a joint museum was organized.

Monument Symbol

The former serf of the Stroganov merchants, Russian architect Andrei Voronikhin, created the building of the Mining Institute in the style of an ancient Greek temple. His high multi-stage stylobate is decorated with sculptural compositions based on the plots of ancient Greek myths: "Hercules strangling Antei" by S. S. Pimenov and "The Abduction of Proserpine" by V. I. Demut-Malinovsky. Amazing sculptures were carved from stone by the artel of the famous stonemason Samson Sukhanov. And the bas-reliefs of V. I. Demut-Malinovsky "Apollo, who comes to Vulcan for a chariot" and "Venus, requiring the volcano of Mars armor" continue the antique theme. The above plots were chosen for a reason: these myths are connected with the underworld, the forces of the Earth, and the kingdom of the blacksmith Hephaestus.

In the courtyard, the architect placed sculptural images of sphinx girls guarding the treasures of thought and the treasures of the Mining Museum. All decorative elements emphasize the importance of the Mining Institute as a temple of engineering and a treasury of human knowledge about the earth and its bowels.

Place of study and work

The new metro station "Mining Institute" will be located in the walking distance from the Mining University - one of the oldest higher educational institutions of the city. At the moment, it is one of the largest universities, providing staff and developments in the field of mineral raw materials and metallurgical industries all over Russia. Here are trained future professionals in the field of mining, metallurgy and oil and gas industry, geology and construction - both industrial and civil. Intensive research is being conducted on the basis of the university’s scientific laboratories in the field of environmental conservation, rational nature management, energy conservation in the field of development and mining of minerals and ores.

Metro station "Mining Institute": a real project or the blue dream of St. Petersburg?

The idea of creating another metro station, which is so necessary for Petersburgers, has already begun to come true. In 2015, work began on laying a tunnel behind the Dybenko-Teatralnaya Station section. The new station, which had two initial design names: “Oblique Line” and “Bolshoy Prospect”, associated with the location of the future lobby, has now received its final name - “Mining Institute” - located near one of the oldest universities in the city. The Mining Institute metro station in St. Petersburg will be part of the Lakhtinsko-Pravoberezhnaya line and will become another deep-seated station, like many stations of the St. Petersburg subway, due to the geographical features of the territory on which the city grew.

Let it be! ..

Initially, the station was planned for commissioning back in 2015. Then the dates were carried forward. And now, 2018 has been replaced in terms of construction. The opening of the Mining Institute metro station is scheduled for November 30, 2019.

As a result, the decorative solution of the station should reflect the idea of Domenico Trezzini and Peter I to make Vasilyevsky Island not only the center of the city, but also a place where people will move along the canals, so the supporting pylons of the arches of the underground lobby of the station are faced with blue marble. The length of the platform extends to the length of the train of 8 cars.

The inclined descent from the above-ground lobby, which goes to the junction of Bolshoi Prospekt and the Oblique line, is equipped with four escalators.

Let there be already the third metro station on Vasilyevsky Island!
