Outrigger: what is it and where does it meet

Do you know the word outrigger? What is it, few know. This is a word of foreign origin, unusual for the hearing of a Russian person. A special term with which, for the most part, people of specific professions and occupations are familiar: athletes involved in rowing, builders and those who are in one way or another on a duty related to construction and loading equipment.

Outrigger on land

Each of us saw construction cranes, forklifts and other heavy equipment. When a device lifts a heavy load, often heavier than the machine itself, there is a chance that it will tip over. In order to prevent this from happening, special supports are provided in the construction of the equipment, which are put forward during work and give greater stability.

This effect is achieved by increasing the area of โ€‹โ€‹the basis of technology - towers, cranes or towers. This rule is studied in physics lessons at school: in order to make the structure more stable , it is necessary to increase the area of โ€‹โ€‹its support and lower the center of gravity. It is this function that heavy parts - outriggers - perform.

Outrigger - what is it in maritime business? By analogy with the land device, this is a design that gives stability to the boat on the water. Originally used by the Austronesian peoples. To prevent their narrow long canoes from overturning by wind and waves, a floating structure was attached to the side, expanding the area of โ€‹โ€‹the boat. It can be added on one or both sides.

In modern rowing, the same principle is used on long narrow boats called gigs. Since these boats are very lightweight for quick gliding, the oars in which the oars are mounted make them remote. This facilitates the work of the rowers and increases the stability of the vessel. You already guessed that this is such an outrigger that performs the same functions as on land. Boats themselves are also called outriggers, like these oarlocks.

Outrigger on a journey

Fans of travel to Asia, Australia and Oceania could hear this word with respect to hotels in this region. Many people know that Outrigger is such a hotel chain that has existed for more than seventy years. It got its name after 1963, when one of the founders of the company, Roy Kelly, bought the old Outrigger Canoe Club and built a hotel on the beach in its place.

Now this network contains almost 40 hotels and condominiums. In Hawaii, there are several Waikiki hotels, such as Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort or OHANA Waikiki Malia by Outrigger, and condominiums: Royal Sea Cliff Kona by Outrigger on the main island, Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger in Maui and others. There are hotels on the islands of the Pacific - Fiji and Guam, Mauritius and the Maldives.

In Vietnam, Outrigger is represented by the Outrigger Vinh Hoi Resort and Spa, in Thailand there are two Outrigger hotels - in Phuket and Samui - Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort and Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort.

It seems that the company "Outriger" has incorporated the property of stability from its name and stands firmly on its feet. After all, itโ€™s known that as you call a boat, itโ€™ll sail. All these hotels are of high quality service and are worth it to stay at them.
