Chess is an old game that has existed for 15 centuries. Some call it art, others call it sports, annually hold competitions among the best chess players. Victory always remains for those who have a clear mind, willpower and are able to make accurate calculations. After all, you need to be able to see all the opponent’s moves ahead in order not to fall into the “trap”, be able to dodge the check and at least lead to such a situation as a draw in chess.
The basic rules of the game
In order to start playing, you need to know the basic rules of the game of chess. A draw, stalemate, checkmate, check - these are the results of the game, which also need to be familiarized with. The whole essence of the game is to alternately move the pieces on the board to the mat, that is, to the position in which the opponent’s king is in a hopeless position.
Two players participate, each with 8 pawns, 2 knights, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, a king and a queen. Pawns are always placed on the second line, they take the main blow on themselves, defending stronger pieces. And on the first line are: along the edges of the rook, then the horses, then the elephants, and in the middle the king and queen (black on the black square and white on the white). The first move is provided to the chess player with bright pieces. And who and what will play - the draw is decided.
How do chess pieces go?
The most important chess figure is the king. He walks only on the neighboring square, regardless of its color, but only if he is not busy and is not under attack from the enemy. The strongest queen can move along the board both horizontally and diagonally and vertically for 1, 2, 3 and more fields. Players are trying to protect this figure, because it has more options. The rook is slightly inferior in strength to the queen. She can walk right only vertically or diagonally and also an indefinite number of fields.
The remaining pieces are the lightest and the weakest. The elephant walks only diagonally, one on black cells, and the other only on white. The horse moves in a special way, with the letter "G", that is, through two cells forward or backward and one to the side (to the right or left). Thus, it slips from the black field to white or, conversely, from white to black. The weakest pieces in a chess game are pawns, they always go forward only, since they cannot retreat back. But if at least one reaches the end of the board, then at the player’s choice it can become a queen, elephant, rook or horse.
If the opponent is on the move of any piece, then he can be “chopped” by removing from the board and standing in his place. But it’s not necessary to take it, sometimes it’s better to find another move, so as not to jeopardize your more powerful pieces and thereby prevent a draw in chess or checkmate.

During a game of chess, players move pieces across the field, attack each other, “knock down”, defend themselves. The king is the main piece that is on the board until the end of the game and cannot be eliminated. But you can put him a check or checkmate.
A check is a position in which the king is attacked by an enemy piece. And the next move it must be protected in one of the ways:
- Move away from the attacked field to another safe square.
- If possible, then close with your other figure. If the check is placed by a knight or a pawn, then this method cannot be used.
- Eliminate the attacking enemy with your own figure.

Each player in the party tries to checkmate the opponent. This is the situation when the king cannot escape from the attack of the piece. In other words, this is the same check, but there is no protection from it. Any piece except the king can checkmate, because, being close to the enemy, he puts himself under attack, which is impossible. A checkmate is the end of a game with the complete victory of one of the parties. But there are situations when a checkmate cannot be put in any way, most often due to an insufficient number of pieces on the board. Thus, a stalemate in chess is declared - a draw.

This term is derived from the Italian and French words, which means "game of a draw." This is the position of the pieces in which it is impossible to make a move, but in this case the king is not under the check. In such a situation, a draw in chess is determined. There are often situations when there are only two kings on the field. Since they cannot checkmate each other, a stalemate is declared.
Many thanks to the stick avoid a possible mat. For example, white has a great advantage in the number of pieces. Black only had a king and a pair of pawns that were closed by his opponents. It seems that the mat is not far away, but the king has nowhere to go, since there is an ambush everywhere, and you cannot put yourself under attack. Thus, out of carelessness of whites, a draw is declared in chess, and they earn only 0.5 points in competitions, although they could become winners of the game.
What does stalemate mean in chess? Is it a loss or a draw? It is difficult to answer this question. For a person who is one step away from victory, an unexpected stalemate is rather a defeat. And for a player who almost got a checkmate, this is almost a victory, because he could not have received these 0.5 points at all.
