Rainfall can be extremely heavy. First it rains, then hail or wet snow may fall as the air cools. These precipitation can occur even without cooling, but always in the presence of powerful cloud cover. If the front hangs over a certain area, the temperature of the atmosphere will drop even more, then real snow will fall on the ground.
