Vaseline was invented in the 19th century and since then serves the person faithfully.

In fact, this tool is a mixture of liquid and solid carbohydrates. Get it by the method of combining any oil (the only exception is castor oil) with solid paraffin hydrocarbons. Then the product is thoroughly cleaned. For this, sulfuric acid or a special clay grade with a whitening effect is usually used.

Externally, petrolatum is an ointment of a yellowish or gray-brown color. It has a creamy sheen and is characterized by a lack of smell and taste.

Types of Vaseline

The petroleum jelly known to us from grandmother’s first-aid kits turns out to be not the only one of its kind. To date, there are several types of this product:

1. Cosmetic Vaseline.
2. Medical Vaseline.
3. Technical Vaseline.

Product Features and Properties

Vaseline technical (GOST 38.0156-79) is characterized by the least cleaning.

That is why it has a peculiar shade - brownish. In addition, technical petroleum jelly is characterized by a pungent odor (with notes of kerosene). This homogeneous mass, reminiscent of an ointment, is often used as a lubricant. In its composition, it contains additives that protect against corrosion and contribute to better adhesion to the treated surface.

It should be remembered that when working with vaseline of this type, its contact with the skin should be avoided. For this can lead to irritation and itching. In addition, removing the product will not be so easy, because it practically does not dissolve in water.

Among the main properties possessed by technical petroleum jelly, the following can be noted:

• Resistance to acids and alkalis. As laboratory studies have shown, such a technical ointment can withstand their effects for about 3 hours.
• Technical Vaseline does not dissolve in water and glycerin, it is hardly soluble in alcohol, but ether, oil and chloroform are the best solvents for this tool.
• It has moisture repellent properties, as a result of which it perfectly protects the workpiece from rust.
• It has good frost resistance. It can withstand temperatures from - 40 to +45 degrees.

Vaseline technical: use of the product

This tool is widely used in various areas of our lives.

1. They are often impregnated with paper and fabrics in the manufacture of electrical equipment.
2. It is used to produce lubricants characterized by ductility and resistant to oxidizing agents. For example, it can prevent oxidation of the battery terminals.
   
3. This tool is used in the glass industry.
4. It is often added as a softener to rubber compounds.
5. Vaseline cover the outer surfaces of mechanisms, if they are to be transported, or in cases of long-term storage.
6. Often it is used in the manufacture of materials that are designed for insulation.

As you can see, technical petroleum jelly, the price of which leaves 2120 rubles per 25 kg, is capable of performing many functions, without which a stable production process is impossible.
