Is the word bullish or a compliment?

“Well, go on!” - it is always said with feeling, savory and heartily, and the one to whom it is addressed is hardly offended and rather proud, although it does not show it.

Let's find out whether they called a person or praised, calling him a bull, that they write dictionaries on this subject and whether there is any other meaning to a term that everyone understands.

Well, you and ... the bull!

The word “bull” appeared in Slavic languages thanks to the Turkic buka, meaning “bull” - a strong, courageous and stubborn animal. Initially, bulls were called tribal bulls, and since in Russia good fellows with a strong heroic were familiar, this word was firmly entrenched in burly, large and healthy men.

So what happens: is bullying an insult or praise? It is unlikely that anyone will be offended that they compared him to a bull - a symbol of the sun, a powerful life force, speed, fertility and the victory of man over the nature of the beast.

Therefore, it is not surprising that long before the appearance of surnames, people took on a generic nickname. It was worn with dignity and probably proudly passed to posterity.

However, the “bull” has other meanings, little-known, but by no means offensive.

Musical instrument, sleeveless jacket and not only

Musical instrument

In the countries that were part of Austria-Hungary, a bass musical instrument was called a bugger - a wooden cylinder, covered with a hide on top and with horse hair sticking out from the middle. To play, the musician dipped his fingers in kvass and pulled the bundle, and the instrument made sounds similar to the roar of a bull.

You will probably be curious to know the other meanings of the word “bull” - ancient and modern, but equally interesting:

  1. Shugai outerwear was very popular in Russia - a short and warm fitted jacket, cut to the hips. And a bull is a sleeveless bull.
  2. In Ukraine, a bittern is called a bittern bird.
  3. Today in Poland and Ukraine there are many villages called Bugai.
  4. In the Orenburg region and in the Krasnodar Territory there are rivers with the name Bugai.
  5. In 2009, the studios of Mexico and Argentina shot a cartoon of the same name.
  6. The surname Bugay is played by Ukrainian football players, a Russian scientist, a Polish conductor and other famous people in their field.

Such a polysemous term came from the ancient Turkic word, and note that in only one modern interpretation does it have a negative meaning - that’s what a hefty kid of a gangster species can be called. It turns out that to be a bull is in any case cool, honorable and completely not offensive.
