An unprepared person is very likely to be lost in this variety and will not choose anything in the end. This problem is solved by a long and methodical study of the topic, understanding of its very essence, numerous discussions and much more. However, there is a way to cut the path a bit.

Steel 09G2S - decoding
In order to understand the properties of a particular alloy, it is not at all necessary to study its molecular structure using complex laboratory instruments. Often, to get a general idea of ββthe properties of the metal and its purpose, it is enough to properly decipher the designation of the steel grade. 092 in this case is decrypted according to the following algorithm:
- The numerical value of 09 corresponds to the carbon content of the alloy. Often the maximum possible value is indicated, which means that the percentage suspension of this element per unit mass of steel does not exceed the threshold of 0.9%.
- The letter designation βGβ, according to the Soviet system of GOSTs, indicates the content of such an alloying element as manganese.
- The next number β2β indicates the maximum percentage of this element, equal to two percent of the total mass.
- The letter βCβ in the Soviet system of GOSTs corresponds to silicon. Given that there is no further numerical value, its content is, on average, less than one percent.
Steel composition
In order to study the properties of this alloy in more detail, it is necessary to know it somewhat better. To do this, there are special industrial regulatory documents of the state standard, in other words - GOSTs. Steel 09G2S, according to its quality standard, has the following composition:
- Carbon (up to 0.12%) is one of the most important additives, giving steel the necessary hardness and strength, but also, as a consequence, fragility.
- Silicon (0.65%) is an element that positively affects the heat resistance of steel.
- Manganese (1.5%) is an additive that significantly increases the strength of steel and its hardenability.
- Nickel (up to 0.3%). This element in the composition is responsible for increasing the ductility of steel, without diminishing its strength properties.
- Sulfur (up to 0.04%) is a harmful impurity that worsens the properties of steel, but its percentage is insignificant, which means that the effect on the material is not critical.
- Phosphorus (up to 0.035%) - a material similar to sulfur, has a much more significant deteriorating effect, so its content is controlled especially carefully.
- Chromium (up to 0.3%) increases the resistance of steel to oxidation and rust.
- Nitrogen (up to 0.008%) is an inevitable impurity that appeared as a result of the steelmaking process.
- Copper (up to 0.3%) positively affects the ductility of steel.
- Arsenic (up to 0.08%) is another harmful impurity that provokes the appearance of internal defects, but its content is limited.
Steel specifications 09G2S
The following is extremely noticeable: there are a lot of impurities in the alloy. Ten names of alloying elements are a considerable amount, however, only manganese can boast of truly significant content. Based on this, it is safe to say that 09G2S steel has heat-resistant properties, and the remaining impurities only complement and improve the structure of steel, which positively affects its other physical properties. It remains flexible, easily amenable to physical processing, including turning. Steel, among other things, has a very uniform structure, which allows it to withstand high loads and pressure.
Analogs
Comparatively similar in composition, steel grades are found everywhere. This is due to their constant demand. It is often required to purchase a part made of 09G2S steel. Therefore, it would be nice to have at hand a list of the names of its foreign analogues:
- Germany - 13Mn6.
- Japan - SB49.
- China - 12Mn.
- Russia - 09G2 or 10G2S.
In general, such a steel grade is very common in industry, so even such a small list is more than enough to find the steel grade you need in any corner of the planet.
