In Altai Krai, earthquakes occur from time to time. The local population even developed a kind of immunity to this natural phenomenon. It happens that people do not notice new shocks, but there are very noticeable shakes with a roar, a wobble of furniture and other unpleasant surprises. Undoubtedly, it is important to know in which places of Altai and why such unexpected things happen.
Recent earthquakes
On February 4, 2019, another earthquake was recorded in the Altai Territory. Shocks were recorded at nine in the morning near the village of Kytmanovo, at a ten-kilometer depth. Local media, citing official sources, reported seismic activity in the Salair Ridge region, which is 33 kilometers east of Zarinsk. At the epicenter, the average intensity of concussions was noted; their magnitude was 2.8 units on the MSK64 scale. It is also noted that five days earlier, on New Year's Eve, at 16.40 in Altai another earthquake occurred, with a magnitude of 3.4 points. Then tremors were recorded in the Biysk-Barnaul depression. Both of these recent earthquakes in the Altai Territory passed without any serious consequences.
Altai earthquake statistics
According to statistics, shaking in Altai most often occurs in the Kamensky district, located at the place where the Earth’s crust passes, or rather the cross of faults. There are two of them: from Shipunovo to the Novosibirsk region - about 800 km, from Krutikhinsky to Khabarovsk district - 70 km. It was there that in the last century, in February 1965, a powerful 7-magnitude earthquake happened.
And recently, in the Kamensky district, nature has repeatedly manifested itself with such phenomena:
- On December 25, 2018, at the beginning of the first night, the Altai-Sayan Geophysical Survey recorded an underground 4-point shock with an epicenter in the area of the village of Pankrushikha. Residents located 4 km from the epicenter of the village did not notice anything.
- On January 9, 2019, a 4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Altai Territory on its border, about 20 km from Ixtima. Tremors of magnitude 3.4 were also recorded near Kamen-on-Ob.
- On January 17, a 3-point push was recorded 25-26 km southeast of Kamen-on-Ob.
According to experts, during an earthquake of 4 points on high-rise buildings, cracks may appear due to swaying. But for now, the Kamenets share only their impressions of a strange rumble, roar and shake with the clinking of dishes. There are no forecasts for repeated shocks.
