Rumor has it that the expression "blue stocking" (the meaning of phraseology) is related to the marital status of women. In other words, blue stockings are called old maids. This is a fallacy, and we will dispel it.
Origin
According to historical sources, the expression appeared in England in the 18th century. It is known that at that time a variety of salons and mugs were very popular.
And according to one version, the blue stocking was first called the writer, translator and botanist Benjamin Stillingfleet. In modern language, a regular at the salon, Elizabeth Montague (writer), was a nonconformist and wore blue instead of black silk stockings. And so it happened. Naturally, the color of stockings is inextricably linked with the eccentric behavior of the scientist.
Another version connects the phrase “blue stocking” (the meaning of phraseology) with the personality of the husband of one of the visitors of the salon E. Montague. The wife of an unknown person renamed the meeting of women in the writer’s salon into the meeting of the “Blue Stocking Society”.
Byron and Moliere
The society of Elizabeth Montague was so popular that Byron immortalized in his work. The comic little thing of the English classic was called "Blue".
Before talking about Moliere, one must nevertheless disclose the meaning of the expression “blue stocking” (the meaning of phraseological unit follows). By “blue stocking” is meant a woman who does not correspond to the feminine canon: she dresses like a man, behaves like a man, takes an interest in what a man is interested in, has a masculine character.
In France of the 17th century there was the term "learned women", which meant the same thing as "blue stocking". However, Flaubert already uses the “blue stocking” in its usual meaning, referring to Moliere.
Business woman and phraseology
Of course, now that the streets are filled with business women, some of whom are much harder by the nature of men, all this seems rather strange. But in England and France of the 17th and 18th centuries, a female intellectual is an out of the ordinary phenomenon. They called her the “blue stocking” (we will fully reveal the meaning of phraseology in the research process).
In Russia, this expression came from France. By the way, one of the female intellectuals and a member of the Blue Stocking Society said that the French term was born as a result of a literal translation of the word bluestocking.
Lyudmila Prokofievna Kalugina
In the light of the new information received, we learned: the expression in question has nothing to do with the marriage status of a woman. For many, this fact will be a revelation. In any case, when we think of a phrase in a new context, the heroine of the immortal (now we can say so) comedy of Eldar Ryazanov immediately comes to mind. We talked about the expression “blue stocking” (the meaning and origin of phraseology is completely consecrated), now we turn to examples.
L.P. Kalugina, of course, is an intellectual. Despite the opinion of her, Anatoly Yefremovich Novoseltsev. She:
- Well versed in poetry (at least B.L. Pasternak).
- Has achieved a high social and professional position.
- It is completely indifferent to appearance.
The last paragraph needs clarification. When a person works on the internal, then he overlooks the external and often penetrates indifference to him. But not only because of their appearance, it is difficult for intellectuals to find a couple. Novoseltsev in the film says to Samokhvalov in direct text: “If you knew, Yura, how I fear her.” Most men are afraid of smart women, because against their background they have a pale appearance, and a strong half of humanity does not tolerate this.
People who are not familiar with the expression “blue stocking” (the meaning and origin of phraseological units could not be briefly described), start from the fact that it is difficult for a woman who is different from the canon to find a pair. Therefore, the error is born that the blue stocking is an old maid.
Sarah Connor of the Terminator pattern 1 and 2
We have pleased connoisseurs of domestic film classics, now it is the turn of foreign lovers.
Sarah is an ordinary student who worked as a waitress. Her life changed dramatically when a cyborg, the terminator killer, was sent from the future for her. And Sarah began a time of dizzying adventures. To protect her, they sent Kyle Reese. As a result of complex plot moves, it turned out that K. Reese became the father of the future head of the resistance, John Connor. But for the time being, one of the heroes of James Cameron's masterpiece did not know what role he would play in the history of mankind. Arriving in the past, he finds Sarah and tells her what will happen next. She thinks he is crazy, but the terminator, as living proof of the inevitability of the attacker, makes Sarah believe the soldier.
The most important thing in the context of our topic is happening towards the end of the film. Sarah takes seriously the story of Kyle Reese, and hence her mission, and turns into a classic image of a woman warrior, revealed in all its glory in the second part of the epic dilogy of J. Cameron.
Sarah is interested in weapons and is studying martial arts. Raises his son John, according to the fact that he is the future of all mankind, his last hope. Sarah picks up men for a reason, but only those who can teach John something. From one phrase of her actual husband Kyle Reese, “There is no fate ...” she develops a whole philosophy. If the reader is unbiased, then he will understand that such characteristics as ideology, devotion to the goal, and a penchant for philosophy are traditionally masculine traits. The canonical image of a woman is different. But this is far from all on the issue of “blue stocking: the meaning of phraseology, examples.”
Ordinary woman
Finally, a little sad. In fact, the “blue stocking” is a compliment to a persistent, independent, independent and intelligent woman. We all know that marriage in our country has long been in crisis, and often girls are left without a husband for various reasons. It also happens that in such a situation no one can help them. Then one of such representatives of the fair sex takes on the functions of a man: he finds a well-paid job, begins to strive for something, understands that her children can only rely on her. And the men who look at such a woman say: "Well, she has children, you know." It doesn’t even occur to them that she is the blue stocking (the meaning of phraseology is short: strong, smart, independent person).
