The main task of this special unit of the
Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation is to ensure law and order in cases of complication of the operational situation in the regions of Russia.
Twenty five years of history
The creation of the OMON of the Ministry of Internal Affairs occurred during perestroika, in the late eighties of the twentieth century. And this was due to the fact that at that time all sections of society were awakened in the country: in addition to political and interethnic strife, criminal showdowns also began. Ordinary policemen could not cope with the rampage.
In October 1988, the head of the USSR Ministry of the Interior signed Order No. 206 on the creation of special forces. That was the transcript of the word OMON. Nineteen such detachments were formed in individual republics of the Soviet Union and regions of the RSFSR. The formation of such special forces has paid off. Therefore, by the end of the nineties, their number was already selected up to hundreds; they were created in almost all major Russian cities.
If you dig deeper
The second regiment of the patrol service (PPS) became that bridgehead, on the basis of which riot police had been created a year earlier (October 23, 1987) in Moscow. The interpretation of this word was then somewhat different - a special police detachment .
But if you dig even deeper, it turns out that the regiment itself (PPS) has a connection with the company of security, created in 1945 to ensure security at the Yalta Conference of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. It is not necessary to say that the most experienced, politically literate, professional fighters were selected there. This goes without saying.
Tasks increased
By and large, it was the fight against criminal criminals, armed to the teeth, that became the root cause of the creation of riot police (transcript: special police unit). However, the social situation worsened from year to year. It was directly related to the collapse of the USSR. And fighters, "riot police" became in the forefront of those who dispersed spontaneous rallies and demonstrations.
The OMON units had a particularly difficult time in the early nineties in the Baltic republics, where the nationalists showed themselves with might and main, and soon the Nazi veterans marched along the city streets.
At the same time, fighters of these special forces began to be sent to the so-called "hot spots". Business trips to Chechnya, to the North Caucasus have become commonplace for them. But many of these guys didnโt return home any more, and if they returned, then with a wounded psyche, almost like from Afghanistan.
The reform also affected riot police
In 2011, during the
reform of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, riot police wanted to rename, as well as the police, which became the police. In fact, at that time an OPON was supposed to arise. However, after a lengthy debate, such a renaming did not begin. It was decided to keep riot police. The decoding of the abbreviation, however, now sounds somewhat different: a detachment of mobile (instead of police) special forces.
The tasks of the special forces after the reform also remained the same. In the first place is the elimination of criminal groups. No less important is the task of ensuring law and order at public mass events, including at sports facilities. And of course, you canโt do without โriot policeโ in the violent suppression of riots and in โhot spotsโ. So, OMON, its decoding sounds like a special-purpose mobile detachment, justifies its name.
To perform such serious tasks, special forces soldiers are armed and equipped much better than ordinary policemen. They undergo special training, are trained not only in shooting from different weapons, but also in the technique of wielding a knife and hand-to-hand combat.
In quantitative terms, compared with the end of the twentieth century, riot police also grew. Two years ago, the number of special forces surpassed 120.
Where did the Bison come from?
"Bison" appeared in 2006. This is what the special-purpose militia unit, directly related to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, was called. It was created on the basis of the OMON GUVD in the metropolitan area. The Bison is directly subordinate to the Minister.
In 2011, he underwent some reorganization, which, however, did not play a special role in the activities of the unit.
The tasks of the Bison are similar to the tasks of the entire riot police. This is the suppression of crime, law enforcement, participation in the fight against terrorist groups.
Although the information on special forces is considered to be closed, information was circulating in the media that the Zubr staff totals more than 2500 people. He relies on good weapons, including armored personnel carriers, helicopters and other equipment.
For heroism and selflessness, five employees of Zubr were awarded the high titles of Heroes of Russia (two posthumously), 95 fighters are knights of the Order of Courage. So the OMON, whose interpretation is interpreted as a detachment not only mobile, but also for special purposes, is a school of courage and courage. Only brave people who know how to control all their feelings, the patriots of Russia can become fighters of this special forces. In 2002, the OMON Day was even set, which is celebrated annually on October 3.
