Courage is a wonderful quality. Moreover, everyone needs it. And those who are in a borderline situation, and the fact that they just live day after day. Do not believe? If this were not so, then we would not have single people. Yes, you can say a lot about the reasons for loneliness, but one of them: people did not have the courage. Today we look at the word “dare”. This verb is interesting, so we hope for a boring conversation.
Origin
It’s good when you can look back centuries and learn about the history of the word. A similar approach makes our knowledge more voluminous. And here the etymological dictionary gives us a helping hand.
A verb from the all-Slavic adjective “dzrz” is formed, which means, of course, “bold”. Interestingly, there are intersections with the Greek language, where drasys is “impudent”.
Such intersections of languages may seem strange to someone, but there is nothing strange about this. Greek influenced Russian. Let us recall at least that once the Bible was only in Greek, therefore there is nothing surprising, so to speak, in reminiscences.
Meaning and interesting experiments with words
First, the meaning of the word “dare”, which is fixed in the explanatory dictionary:
- Feel free to strive for something noble and new (high).
- Dare at anything (obsolete)
And then the fun begins. Have you ever thought about what you can say "insolence", but you can not say "courage". The latter even sounds a bit ridiculous. Imagine: "He spoke courage to him." No, it doesn’t work. And why? Because “insolence” has the meaning of “disrespectful, offensive, rude,” and courage does not.
In the explanatory dictionary of courage, you can only read the following: "Going beyond the boundaries of accepted, decent, defiant." And this is the most “rebellious” meaning. Insolence in this sense is more radical. It would be interesting to know why one is called boldness and the other is boldness, but so far this is a mystery covered in darkness. The language holds many more puzzles. But one secret obeyed us: the verb "to dare" is no longer a problem. True, the study is not over yet. We are waiting for synonyms. Let us pass to them.
Synonyms
Since "to be bold" is an outdated word, we will need its replacement more than ever. Let's look at them:
- take a chance;
- to decide;
- to dare.
And that's all, if you omit the various options, including the word "courage", as well as whole expressions.
Remember what was said at the beginning: courage is needed not only for crisis situations, but also for everyday life. Therefore, think more often about the Russian language and, in particular, about the verb “dare”, this will be very useful. Almost as useful as gymnastics in the morning, which no one ever does.
