In any language, often ordinary words can become brand names like Apple (“apple”) and Windows (“windows”) in English or “Good” in Russian. However, foreigners, for whom this term is alien, often perceive it as a simple name, not even suspecting its real meaning. For example, consider a word such as supreme. This is not just an adjective of the English language, but also the name of several brands. Which ones? Let's find out!
What does supreme mean in English?
First of all, it is worth figuring out what the studied adjective means in the original language.
Translated into Russian, supreme is “highest” or even “highest”. Not surprisingly, the word was chosen as the name for several brands. Indeed, in the English-speaking population, it causes persistent associations with something best of its kind. In the same way as the phrase “high quality”, which has depreciated today due to the fact that caring Chinese write it on absolutely any product, thus striving to attract the attention of potential buyers.
Supreme Clothing Brand
Paradoxically, the name Supreme would be more logical to use for the name of clothing brands a la Chanel or Dolce & Gabbana, specializing in the manufacture of outfits for the wealthy cream of society, who want to be stylish and exclusive. However, this name is an American brand specializing in casual street wear.
The main types of products that go under this brand are hats, baseball caps, T-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, jeans and jackets.
The features of the clothing of this brand are its simplicity and convenience of outfits. Also, Supreme’s outfits are of high quality, which allowed the brand to quickly become famous in the world market.
Among other features of this brand are small circulations of products. That is, each collection is conceived as limited. The essence of such a policy is to increase the excitement of buyers, as well as to prevent clothes from gathering dust in warehouses.
Appearance story
The founder of this brand is James Jebbia, who opened a small store in New York in 1994. At that time, the concept of “street clothing” was new and none of the serious couturiers risked working in this area. The fact is that it was difficult to predict what ordinary guys would like and what not. And to impose their own tastes on them, as is done in the world of haute couture, was very problematic.
However, Jebbia was not afraid to start working with this particular type of client. He explained his decision by the fact that he once faced with the lack of everyday comfortable and high-quality clothes in the fashion industry, which would not be part of a sports uniform. Realizing that he was not the only one, the entrepreneur decided to establish his own brand.
Despite the modest (as for New York) budget of twelve thousand, James's store soon began to bring huge profits and his owner began to expand his business.
The company logo (which resembles the packaging of Colgate toothpaste to domestic consumers) was made on the basis of the ideas of a fashionable American copywriter - Barbara Krueger. It is noteworthy that Jebbia was not going to officially register Supreme as a trademark only nine years after its creation. He explained his decision by saying that he was too busy to spend his time on such formalities.
Supreme Sports Equipment
After six years of work, James decided to supplement the product range. And since 2000, his brand also began to produce bicycles, boxing gloves, skateboards, bats, etc. sport equipment.
In fairness, it is worth noting that in this case Supreme is not a manufacturer of this product. Jebbia just allows you to put your name on the goods of other, less well-known brands and sells these things in their stores as well.
What is Supreme x?
The founder of Supreme brand - James Jebbia - many perceive as a successful fashion designer, although this is not entirely true. Rather, he is a brilliant marketer who in an unimaginable way feels what people like and knows how to sell it to them, and at rather high prices. So, for example, today an ordinary plain monotonous cap with an embroidered Supreme inscription costs fifty euros on the company's official website, which is not cheap, even by European standards.
Proof of the mind of James was his next commercial move. After the brand became very popular, its owner entered into contracts with eminent clothing manufacturers, together they began to produce street clothes called Supreme x ... After x, usually comes the name of the brand with which Supreme collaborates.
Louis Vuitton, Lacoste, North Face, Nike, Stone Island and Champion are far from a complete list of the brands that today produce clothing for the James Jebbia brand.
It is noteworthy that these products are simultaneously presented in their branded boutiques and in Supreme stores.
Hockey equipment
As mentioned above, James Jebbia officially registered the word supreme as a brand name only in 2013. Thanks to this, the world famous hockey equipment company Bauer Hockey was able to take advantage of this. She released a series of equipment (skates, hockey sticks, protection, etc.) under the Bauer Supreme logo.
Thus, the company managed to attract the attention of fans of Jebbia brand products.
In fairness, it is worth noting that Bauer used only the word supreme, but its design was in no way similar to the James Jebbia logo.
Computer game
Fans of playing on the computer know another proper name, which includes the adjective in question. We are talking about the Russian computer game Supreme Commander ("Supreme Commander-in-Chief"), released in 2007. By its genre, it refers to real-time strategy.
Also in the same year, an independent supplement was released - Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, which was liked by gamers, not only in the Russian Federation, but also in Europe, the USA and other countries.
Coffee supreme
In addition to all of the above, supreme is also a type of coffee (arabica coffee). Coffee beans of this quality are grown mainly in two countries: Colombia and Peru.
In both countries, suprim coffee is not the name of the arabica variety, but the level of its quality.
For example, in Colombia, varieties marked supreme are made only from large, selected, high-quality whole grains.
In addition to it, three more species are common in Colombia - extra, excelso and passila (made from production waste and does not leave the country). So if the packaging of this drink from Colombia is marked supreme, it means that you have the best that could grow in this country.
In Peru, the mark “suprim” is placed on organic monosorts of arabica, also of the highest quality.
That is why, if a bag of this fragrant drink is found on the shelves of the store, the name of which contains the word in question, as a rule, the country of its production and the exact name of the type of arabica should also be indicated there. If supreme is presented as the name of a variety, then it is either a fake or an unfair translator.
