“Deportivo La Coruña” is a football club playing in the championship of Spain. The city where the team is located is La Coruña.
Foundation History
The club was founded in 1906. The first president of the team was Luis Kornide. Officially, “Deportivo” was registered a year later. In those years, the club played in the old stadium, and the team needed to move to a new place. Such a stadium was Viejo Riasor.
In 1920, the Spanish team was able to very successfully perform at the Olympic Games, which contributed to the rapid development of football in the country. In Spain, they decided to hold the national championship in 1928. Up to this point, “Deportivo La A Coruña” held friendly meetings with the teams of his and neighboring countries.
Perform in the championship, “Deportivo” was only in the second division. The team finished the first season in eighth place out of ten. The first worthy victory happened in 1932 over Real Madrid in the country's Cup. The long-awaited entry into the first league occurred only in 1941. The club had a very difficult financial situation. In order to pay a reward to football players the size of twenty euros had to collect donations.
Games in the first division of “Deportivo La Coruna” showed quite acceptable and immediately took fourth place in the championship. The unsuccessful season was 1944-1945: the team went back to the second league. Then followed the fall and ups. Only in 1950, the team was able to climb to second place in the first division. Foreign players began to come to the club, who provided a fairly strong game. Showing good results in the second league, “Deportivo” could not resist in the first. The team, because of its poor funding, could not invite and retain experienced football players.
Hard times
Especially Deportivo La Coruña felt a problem in 1973. The team again went into the second division and was on the verge of relegation to the very bottom of the Spanish championship. A similar situation badly affected the club’s income. Debt “Deportivo” is constantly growing.
In the 80s, the team spent seasons mainly in the second division, only occasionally rising up. The tragedy could have happened in 1988. The team was saved by a victory over Racing, which stopped them falling down and saved them from possible extinction.
The turning point was the election of a new president - Augusto Cesar Lendoiro. By that time, the club's debts had grown to four million euros. The new president solved problems with knowledge of the matter. Although the club still could not stand firmly on its feet, the first successes were visible to the naked eye. Debts were gradually repaid, new players were acquired.
90s
This period was a turning point in the history of the team. In the first season, she miraculously managed to stay in the first division. In the following season, the football club “Deportivo La Coruna” for the first time in history was able to secure participation in the UEFA Cup. Fans remembered that season as a defeat in the race for the championship in the last minutes of the season.
1995 brought the club the first major award - the Spanish Cup. Then the players were able to conquer the Super Bowl.
Especially successful was the 1999-2000 season. The last rounds of the championship were very tense, many until the last doubted that the team would be able to keep the first line. In May, everything was decided - for the first time since its founding, Deportivo La A Coruña became the champion of the country. Spain and the team fans took to the streets and celebrated this achievement.
Present
After the championship, “Deportivo” twice in a row was able to take second place in the national championship. In other competitions, the team also did well. The situation began to deteriorate in 2005. The team began to take places below the first five, and in 2012 it completely flew into the second league. After 2010, the club began alternating ups and downs in the country's divisions.
