Biographical data

Carlos Keyros was born in March 1953 in the Mozambique city of Nampul. At that time, this African state was a colony of Portugal.

Keyush’s gaming football career was short lived. He played only six years (from 1968 to 1974) for the youth and adult team from Nampula “Ferrovario”, after which he decided to pursue a coaching career. To this end, he moved to Europe.

Successful start of a coaching career

After moving to Portugal, Carlos Keyros, for about ten years, worked as a coach in children's and youth football teams, created programs for the development of this sport.

In 1984, he had a unique chance: a 31-year-old specialist was offered to head his country's youth team. It was he who discovered for Portugal and the whole world such future world-class stars as Rui Costa, Fernando Couto and Luis Figo.

In 1989, the first serious achievement at the international level came to coach Carlos Keirush. At the world championship in Saudi Arabia, his wards first successfully passed the group stage, then the Colombians and Brazilians won the playoffs, and in the final they were stronger than Nigeria. Thus, the youth team of Portugal for the first time in its history became the best in the world championship.

Two years later, a similar championship was home for the winners. The wards of Carlos Keirush felt themselves here as real owners. First, they went through the group stage without loss of points, then they defeated the teams of Mexico and Australia, and in the final in the series of penalty shoot-outs they wrested the victory from the Brazilians.

Following this success, Keyros was invited to be the coach of the Portuguese national team. He stayed here for three years, but could not bring the team to the European Championship in 1992.

In 1994, Portugal reached the final of the world championship in the United States, but there she stopped at the group stage. This result was perceived as a failure, and Keirush was fired from his post as head coach.

Club and national wanderings

The next team for Carlos was the modest Portuguese club Estoril, which he led for two seasons. In 1996, the specialist accepted the offer to head the New York / New Jersey Metrostars MLS club. He did not stay here for long and soon returned to his homeland.

This time, Carlos Keyros led the Lisbon Sporting. In the two years spent here, he could not set up the capital's team to seriously fight the giants of Portuguese football - “Porto” and “Benfica”. The highest achievement was the second place championship in the 1996/97 season.

After leaving Sporting, the Portuguese took a short break in his work, and in 2010 he ended up in a club from the J-League Nagoya Grempus Eyt. But Japanese football Carlos Keirush did not like, and soon he left.

In 2000, a Portuguese specialist led the UAE national team, and a year later became the coach of the team from South Africa. Under his leadership, South Africans made their way to the 2002 World Cup, but a few days before the start of the world championship, Keirush resigned.

Experience in famous teams

After leaving the post of coach of the South African national team, Carlos ended up in Manchester United, where he became an assistant to the legendary Alex Fergusson. During the year spent in the English club, Keirush not only learned a lot, but also established himself as an excellent specialist. Thanks to this, in 2003 he got a super chance - Carlos was offered to head the Real Madrid.

However, the Spanish stage of his career was unsuccessful. At the disposal of Keiros, there were many top-level players - Zidane, Raul, Casillas, Beckham, Figo, Roberto Carlos, but even with this selection of performers, he not only did not win Primera, but also lost the modest “Zaragoza” in the Cup final. It is not surprising that after such a disastrous season, Carlos, who was the first Portuguese coach in the history of the “royal” club, was fired.

But the coach did not remain without work. He again went to England, where he continued to work as an assistant with Fergusson. Here he spent four more seasons.

A new stage in working with national teams

In 2008, Carlos Keyros again led the national team of Portugal. His task was to bring her to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. But after an unsuccessful start (loss and three draws), he was dismissed from his post.

The next place of work for the Portuguese coach was the position of chief coach of the Iranian national team. In 2014, he brought the team to the final of the World Cup in Brazil, where the team from Asia could not leave the group, which included Argentina, Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 2015, at the Asian Cup, the Iranians, under the leadership of Keirush, went through the group stage without losses, without losing a single goal in three games. However, in the quarterfinals they lost on penalties to the Iraqi national team.

After several attempts to resign as head coach, the Portuguese still remained. And not in vain - at the World Cup in Russia, Iran Carlos Keirush qualified as one of the first in the world.
