Zhdanovskaya embankment reflects the history of the city, like any other street or courtyard in St. Petersburg. In the XVIII century, the development of the embankment was dictated by military needs. In the XVIII century, the owner of the territory of houses from the eleventh to the fifteenth was B. Kh. Minikh.
The first houses on Zhdanovskaya Embankment appeared during the life of Peter I. At that time, the section of the modern embankment was part of Nikolskaya Street. In 1738, it began to be called the Engineering Embankment, since 1733 the School of Engineering was located here.
Historical reference
As a teacher at the School of Engineering, I. M. Golenishchev-Kutuzov worked. The future commander M.I. Kutuzov studied and taught in the same walls. Since 1753, the school was headed by A.P. Hannibal, a talented engineer, Pushkin's great-grandfather.
In subsequent years, the embankment was called differently. Despite the fact that in 1792 it officially became known as the Embankment of the Zhdanovka River, the people until 1817 adopted the name Korpusnaya Embankment.
In the XIX-XX centuries. apartment buildings were built here. The architecture of the new buildings was new. House number 9 of the merchant A.E. Meisner is a vivid example of the Art Nouveau style.
Active development began at the end of the 19th century. The number of houses where grocers were located and workers of nearby factories settled increased.
In 1969, the section of the road from Bolshoi Prospect to Zhdanovskaya Street received the official name Zhdanovskaya Embankment.
Famous people
At different times on the embankment, not far from Bolshoi Prospekt, famous people lived - writers, composers, scientists.
In the house number 3 in the 20s of the last century lived the famous artist of that time V.P. Belkin. A.N. Tolstoy settled in the same house after returning from exile. The apartment was five-room, and Tolstoy lived in it from 1923 to 1928. Well-known works were written here: the novel “Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin”, the stories “White Night”, “Roommate” and others.
Tolstoy visited Mikhail Bulgakov and Anna Akhmatova, Igor Ilyinsky, Rina Zelenaya, as well as other famous writers, actors and artists.
House No. 11, erected in 1950, is interesting in that there is a four-story building 11G in the courtyard, in which engineer Elk from the novel “Aelita” by A. N. Tolstoy lived. The spaceport is also described in the work - a launching pad in the wasteland. There is a real prototype of the hero - Yu. D. Elk, aviator, future designer of rocket engines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the area turned into an industrial one due to the abundance of factories and manufactories. It was unattractive for rest and walks.
Industrial waste was dumped into the river. Because of this, the water in the river was so polluted that the housewives even refused to rinse the laundry in it.
In the 1920s, the district began to be ennobled and became a center of cultural recreation for citizens in connection with the construction of a stadium on Petrovsky Island.
Sports arenas
In the area of Zhdanovskaya embankment of St. Petersburg on Petrovsky Island, the Petrovsky Sports Complex is located. The stadium was built in 1925. During the blockade was destroyed. Rebuilt at the end of the 50s.
Nearby, on the water, is the Aqua Hostel Hotel and Hostel, where you can stay at any time for any number of days. Hostel services differ from hotel services in that in this case only a bed is rented, and everything else - a room, a toilet, a shower and a kitchen are shared. The institution works around the clock. Hostel address: St. Petersburg, Zhdanovskaya embankment, 2g.
Sports Palace "Hockey"
Between Zhdanovskaya street and the embankment there is the Hockey Sports Palace. The palace was built in 1989 to host home games of the domestic championship and other sporting events. This small-sized indoor skating rink on Zhdanovskaya embankment is a favorite place for active recreation of citizens. On weekends, the stadium is open for skiing at night from 23:30 until 6:00. There are daytime skiing on weekdays from 16:00 to 18:00.
Skating to music under the guidance of professional DJs is often held here, games and competitions are organized. Hockey tickets are often raffled off. They like to come here with whole companies.
The quality of ice here is excellent, filling is carried out every hour and a half. Combined with low prices - this is very good. Recently, there are so many people who want to ride that it is not always possible to get on the ice.
Getting to the ice palace is simple: take about ten minutes from the Sportivnaya metro station, and the same time from the Chkalovskaya station.
What else is attractive about the palace? There is a buffet where you can always eat. The assortment includes hot drinks, sandwiches and other snacks. Hire and sharpening skates. And all this for a relatively small fee.
Repair of the embankment
In the XVIII-XIX centuries. the coastal fortifications of the Zhdanovka River were wooden. Part of the destroyed wooden wall can be seen in the lower reaches on the left bank.
Since 1963, granite was used to strengthen the coast .
Today Zhdanovskaya embankment is in need of repair, since the wear of the coastal wall has already amounted to more than 70%. Serious damage detected. At the water, granite separated from concrete blocks, and in some places it is completely absent. Cracks detected.
It is planned to repair a section of the coastline from Zhdanovsky bridge to Maly prospect 468 meters long. The works are estimated at 27 million rubles. The completion date for the repair is October 15, 2019.
