Why it is so difficult to improve the level of language: psychological aspect

In the modern world, the word "stress" is synonymous with the word "well-being." To date, this ailment has captured more than 60% of the world's population and, most likely, is not going to stop there. The mind of a person in a stressful state is overwhelmed with indignation, he refuses to work, and what is most terrible for him, he can’t reach his master in any way, but he is no longer angry ...

language level
Now you must be wondering - what about the foreign languages? The fact is that a person who is in a state of emotional tension, primarily at the psychological level, is not able to effectively learn a language, correctly express his thoughts in foreign speech, and even more so to raise the level of the language. Defects appear as follows:

  1. The pace of speech of a person in a stressful state changes - it becomes either an order of magnitude slower or faster. Speech is interrupted by sighs, and because of this, the talking person is constantly distracted from the content of the conversation, trying to focus on the quality of the pronounced sounds. In the end, the phrase is incomplete or it is rather difficult for the interlocutor to understand its content. Accordingly, no matter how much you train in this state, it is almost impossible to raise the level of the language.

  2. A lot of memory gaps appear , which in most cases are filled with such not-so-successful blotches like “uh”, “mmm” or “mmm”. The word, it seems, was taught and successfully used before, but now it is so difficult to remember it, and there is no strength for it ... The use of such formations in speech is characteristic of 70% of people who have nothing to do with learning foreign languages - what really talk about polyglot? It is not for nothing that many linguistic authors advise, before taking a test to determine the level of the language, for a day to distract from the outside world and completely delve into the language being studied.
  3. Inevitably, a change in the grammatical structure of speech, namely: an increase in the number of verbs and nouns compared to adverbs and adjectives. The carriers (interlocutors) most often associate the presence of such a defect with language failure, in other words, for them it is a rather low level of language.
  4. The maximum simplification of lexical speech. We try not to use long phrases, we select short words with the highest frequency. Often when talking with a foreigner, we are worried, trying to speak as clearly as possible in order to avoid being misunderstood, despite the fact that the effect may turn out to be opposite. This is manifested in incompleteness, omission of a part of the word, change in the structure of the sentence (which is especially important, for example, in English). Moreover, sentences can be incomplete both logically and syntactically. Accordingly, working in this mode, it is impossible to reach a more advanced level of language.

It turns out that in a conversation we use only 20 percent of the words we have studied - we take only what is in memory on the surface, not really straining ourselves. The inability to clearly express one's thoughts gives rise to ambiguity, and the interlocutor is forced to constantly ask again.

language test

Especially seriously should approach the study of a foreign language, if career advancement depends on it. In this case, you need to gather strength and competently distribute your curriculum, not forgetting that before classes you need to distract (relax), since it directly depends on whether the lessons will bear fruit. Today, almost every highly paid vacancy requires knowledge of the English language. And if, filling out a resume, you did not find a column titled “Levels of language proficiency” (of course, foreign), do not forget to indicate your language skills in the “Additional Information” section, which the HR manager should fairly evaluate.
