Exibishen cultivation of onions: some recommendations

The onion family includes more than 200 species of crops native to Europe. The most popular and cultivated are leeks, shallots, onions and garlic. Not so long ago, the family acquired another variety of onions called Exibishen.

This variety was the result of the work of breeders of the company from the Netherlands Bejo Zaden. The variety turned out to be annual, mid-season, not intended for long-term storage (no longer than 4 months), but extremely productive - a crop of 1 sq. Km. m area, on average, is 2.3 kg. Bulbs are oval, juicy, sweet, ideal for making salads. The weight of one onion is, on average, 110 g, but can, in some cases, reach up to 500 and even 800 g. It is recommended that onions are grown in home gardens and cottages. Planting is carried out both using seeds and seedlings.

Seedling cultivation of onions allows you to get larger bulbs, but requires a lot of labor. The most optimal is to grow onions from seeds, which are recommended to be prepared in advance. Sowing onions in open ground Excibishen, the cultivation of which is proposed to be mastered in this material, should be done somewhere in April, which means that seed can be prepared in February-March without haste. Since the size of the seeds is very small, and they should be sown no less than 5 cm, it will be most rational and convenient to first fix them on paper tapes.

This is done this way: first, the most ordinary paste is prepared from starch of low-flowing consistency, to which powdered fertilizers with a full complex of minerals and trace elements, such as AVA, are added. Transfer the finished mixture into a container, from which it will be convenient to squeeze it drop by drop. It can be a plastic bottle with a hole and a tube in the cap or a regular, preferably durable, plastic bag with a small hole in the corner. The strips are convenient to take from a roll of toilet paper, cut across into two or three parts with a sharp knife. On a strip, every five centimeters, drops of a mixture of paste with fertilizers are squeezed out and onion seeds are laid on them with tweezers. It is necessary to allow the paste to dry, roll the strips into rolls and leave until the due date.

Sow onion Exibishen, the cultivation of which is not a difficult and very thankful process, should be in loose, fertile, non-acidic soil, to a depth of 1.5 cm. Further cultivation of onions involves timely watering, weeding from weeds and, most importantly - loosening the soil. Shoots will appear in about 10 days. From germination to harvesting will take about 130 days, a month before this should completely stop watering. The signal that it is time to collect the onion will be some thinning of the stem, yellowness and lodging of the leaves. Harvest should not be delayed, otherwise the onion growth will resume again and the bulbs will become unsuitable for storage.

If the cultivation of Exhibishen onion is supposed to be a seedling method, then seeds should be planted in a box in March. The thickness of the fertile soil layer should be at least 10-15 cm. The seeds are sown to a depth of 1.5 cm rather densely, watered and the box is covered with a film or glass, which can be removed after germination. Watering should be done in moderation; it should also be watered before planting in open ground. Landing on the site in the month of May, in prepared and fertilized soil. Gently pry seedlings together with the soil and, having previously cut the root by 1/3 of the length, plant them at a distance of 20-25 cm from each other. During the growing season, the plant does not require additional fertilizing, and needs only moderate watering and timely loosening of the soil.
