The Russian language is armed with many words that denote settlements of various types. It can be cities, villages, towns and cities. But in English there are two words that are translated the same way. These are the words city and town, meaning "city".
City
We will analyze each of these two words separately. If at first glance between the words city and town the difference is not so obvious, then after reading the article it will become more clear.
So, city is a settlement that is much larger than town. It is closer to the rhythm of modern life, the infrastructure in it is more developed and diverse.

City is also the name for one of the oldest parts of London located in the city center. There is even such a thing as city-man. It denotes a person doing business and working in the city center.
Town
Unlike the first term, town means a relatively small city. Previously, there was a basic criterion that clarified whether a place can be called the word city. If the city did not have a church, then it could only be a town. Now this is irrelevant, and the city belongs to one or another category is determined by the number of people and living conditions.
This does not mean that if the settlement is called the word town, then it will not have a single high-rise or a large shopping center. Nevertheless, the difference is quite obvious to those who have been to cities with radically different populations. For people who are accustomed to the crazy pace of life in a metropolis, the measured weekdays of city dwellers may seem less boring at all. But this is a misleading impression, because each city has its own unique charm, and it does not matter if it is London or a small village in its vicinity. City, town - the only difference is in the rhythm of life, comfortable for you personally.

Of course, there are many other concepts denoting various settlements. So that in the future you don’t have any confusion when you hear this or that word, we selected the most common ones and put them on the list along with the translation:
