Adore - what is it? Meaning and Interpretation

To adore is a curious verb: firstly, it has an interesting, but rather obvious origin; secondly, there are people who make a mistake in the second letter “o” of the root because of the pseudo-rule “I hear and write”. Therefore, we consider the meaning of the word, its origin, as well as why it is not worth writing the letter “a” after “b”.

Origin

Arms raised and cross

Your research small or large, but it is best to start with a historical background, if possible. In our case, sometimes the etymological dictionary is silent. But not now. Everything is quite simple, and our reader, of course, already guessed. To adore is “to love like a god” or “to worship like a god”. Initially, there was the option of “dear,” that is, to make an object of worship out of something. If you dive into etymology, it sounds scary, but now it means just loving something very much. In this case, worship is an optional part.

Value

Now that we have brought the necessary basis for the content of the concept, we can open the cards regarding the meaning of the word “adore”:

  1. To have a feeling of strong love or admiration for someone (or something).
  2. To love very much (vernacular).
  3. Similarly, in the meaning of the modern verb "deify" (currently obsolete).

The line between the first and second value is thin. Therefore, let us first compose examples, of course, we will not duplicate what is given in the dictionary, and then we will analyze them. So:

  • He adored his father for his intelligence, courage and ability to always come to the rescue in another situation.
  • I love cold pasta with mayonnaise, and in England such a dish is called "pasta salad."
  • In ancient times, people loved the images of their totem animals.

Now every meaning has a corresponding example. The language, as it were, tells us that it is possible to adore a person or his work, but it is already inadmissible to treat food the same way. If you do not believe me, look in the dictionary, there are similar examples, and they lead to certain conclusions. “Adore” is a multifaceted verb that can change the tone of meaning depending on the context.

How not to make a mistake at the root of the word?

Cross and clouds in the shape of a heart

Yes, in the verb in question, the two letters “o” and both are in danger. Someone will say, think, a mistake. And let's imagine that in a person’s name they would always make mistakes: here and there, they would forget or replace letters to their taste. People would probably be very offended. And the words are what? They will endure everything, but they have no soul. Now imagine what it is, and immediately the perspective will change. So, in order not to offend the words, you need to remember carefully the history of the origin: to adore is, first of all, “God”. It is difficult to make a mistake in the word “god” and write, for example, “bug”. The whole point will be completely different. I would not want to think that the world is ruled by some kind of fundamental “bug”, although this explains a lot. But still I want the world to have God, and with it the highest meaning.
