Valor - what is it? Correlation of the concepts of "valor", "courage", "honor"

In the life of every man comes a time when he wants to know, valor - what is it, and whether he is capable of it. Usually a person is tested on the qualities of character by life, and spontaneously (without a suitable situation) it is very difficult to find any virtues in oneself. In our article we will try to determine the differences in the concepts of honor, valor and courage (courage).

Variations in the definition of courage

Usually, when a person commits some selfless act exposing the nobility of his soul, he is called "brave" or "brave". If a person does the same in wartime on the military field, then he is called "valiant." It is difficult to say why, but historically, it has traditionally been the case that when we talk about military exploits, we mean "valor", and when about civilians - "courage." I don’t want to ask: “Valor - what is it?”, Right?

valor what

Fear

There is a common misconception that valor and courage is the absence of fear. Forced to disappoint: this is not the case. In the world there is only one person who is not able to be afraid - one woman, now she is about thirty years old. Scientists are closely studying her and wondering how she was able to live for so long.

Fear is necessary for man, it is part of his system of self-preservation. The answer is that a brave, brave, valiant person is able to overcome his fear, unlike those who do not have this internal quality. We hope that now there are no questions left about valor - what is it, and how does this quality relate to fear.

Valor, courage and honor

honor and valor

Now it is time to separate the concepts of courage, courage, valor and honor. As we have already found out, the first three concepts are combined by two main characteristics.

  1. These are different names for the quality of a person’s character, which reveals his ability to courageous acts and sacrifice for the sake of others.
  2. They suggest overcoming fear.

"Honor" is a concept external to a person and has a kind of compulsory social character. There are certain groups of people who attach honor (i.e., how a person looks in the eyes of others) to a justifiably high value (the army or the criminal world, i.e. any organization dominated by hierarchy and structure), because in such an environment not a whim, but a matter of life and death.

And the defense of honor does not always involve overcoming fear. Since the concept of honor is abstract and, rather, social than personal, fear can coexist with the desire to defend its honor in the eyes of the public.

Thus, honor and valor are the external and internal side of one phenomenon - courage. A valiant person can be quiet and modest in a peaceful life and courageous in crisis situations, and a person of honor is rather a social literacy and a way of recognizing a person as valiant in the eyes of the majority. The title "man of honor" can be both an object of respect for other people, and an occasion for a variety of manipulations of a dubious nature, so you need to be very careful in determining whether valor is what and what is honor. Maybe sometimes it's better to back off?

Braveheart - 1995 Mel Gibson movie

what is valor

Everyone knows the masterpiece of Mel Gibson. It tells of the fate of the "ordinary peasant" William Wallace, who went to war in England, because the English lord killed his wife. We are now little interested in the plot, the main question in the context of our article, why Mel Gibson called his film “Braveheart”, and not “valiant”. Probably because William Wallace in the interpretation of Mel Gibson (W. Wallace as a historical person, we leave aside) was not originally a soldier, but showed civil courage. And perhaps this is just a matter of harmony.

The question of what valor is is examined by us thoroughly. We hope that after reading this article, the reader will no longer have doubts about the definition of terms.
