Perhaps there are no garden plots where at least a few raspberry bushes did not grow. Everyone knows about its beneficial qualities. Both kids and adults love her. But how to care for her, when to trim raspberries, fertilize, not everyone knows. Of course, this plant requires attention. This work is not so difficult, even for a person far from gardening.
It is known that raspberries are perennial shrubs. However, the life span of each individual shoot is 2 years. The first year the stem is growing, gaining strength. But in the second year it branches, gives a harvest and dies. From the root offspring to continue the life of the bush, new stems grow. In order not to violate this order and receive a plentiful crop of the highest quality, annual pruning of plants is required. When to prune raspberries?
1st pruning option - autumn
It is in September after the collection of berries that the base of the new crop is laid. Shrub pruning is done in the fall to prepare the plant for winter. Thawed branches should be removed. With them we begin pruning. It is easy to distinguish them on a harder brown stalk and branches. When it is time to cut raspberries, you should not postpone this event, since it is impossible to reanimate the old branches, they will still dry out and fall off.
But in this case, young stems are in danger. Slices should be done closer to the base. It is also necessary to remove diseased, broken and weak shoots growing in the middle.
Pruning raspberries will allow you to get rid of various infections, pest larvae and will provide an opportunity to actively develop new strong branches. For each meter, it is enough to leave 10-15 shoots. All old cut branches should be removed from the site and burned immediately to prevent the spread of infection.
Winter raspberries
The long remaining branches can be cut by 10-15 cm. Then it is advisable to tie the shoots to the support. If a snowless winter is expected, barriers and shields for delaying snow are placed in the garden. The resulting snowdrifts will protect the bushes from freezing. If the winter is frosty, it is recommended to pin shoots to the ground with metal hooks. Then the snow will cover them and save them from freezing. Before wintering, all leaves are removed from the bush. This is easy to do by putting the mitten on your hand, and then running it up the stalk. The leaves will fall away, the kidneys will not be affected. Left leaves rot, damage the kidneys. Only after removing the leaves, the raspberries are bent no higher than 50 cm from the ground and fixed.
2nd crop option
When to cut raspberries, if not in the fall? Work with young shoots can be left in the spring (after the snow melts). In plants, the tops are only trimmed, tied into sheaves and bent to the ground. Plus this option - better snow retention and a more accurate allocation of strong branches.
With any type of pruning, the soil loosens in autumn, fertilizes with manure, peat or compost, and is mulched with sawdust. All these works should be performed annually.
These options are common raspberry varieties. However, there are repair varieties, they branch the stem and bear fruit in the first year, and continue in the next. When is it better to prune the raspberries of the repair varieties? Various cropping methods are offered here. You can delete everything that has grown over the season. New shoots next year will give a new crop.
But this method does not allow to use the full potential of fruiting raspberries. Not all berries have time to ripen. Therefore, most often bushes of this variety are cut like usual. Trimming
remont raspberries can very well be done in the spring. Each gardener decides when to cut raspberries, at his discretion, using not only the recommendations of agronomists, but also his personal experience.
