First settlements
The settlement of this harsh territory began in the 12th century, according to archaeological finds. The first written records of the area date back to 1904 in the book by A. A. Dunin – Gorkavich “Tobolsk North” mentioned that there were several huts. Then in 1926, residents were mentioned in the census. Around this time, the entire population of Nyagan was made up of three Khanty families - the Khaimazov brothers. They hunted fishing and hunting, kept a few horses, cows and deer. They lived in yurts in the summer and in wooden huts. The settlement became known as Nyagan Yurts. Later, special settlers settled in these places, who also actually lived here in subsistence farming.
Not far from the settlement, a fishing station was organized, in which a male and female hut were built, where seasonal workers worked. In the warm season, fish were caught - a chebak, pike, ide, perch were salted and dried. In 1939, the population of Nyagan was 112 people.
The base of the village
In 1954, a new forest site was opened on the territory now called Old Nyagan. 30 workers moved here with their families. They cleared the site, set up a tent, and began to build dormitories, schools, and baths. As the volumes of logging grew rapidly, in 1965 a new village of loggers Nyakh was created, housing and cultural facilities were built. The following year, the Nyagan timber industry enterprise was founded, where the railway was built a little later. In 1966, the Nyagan timber industry enterprise was organized, which was engaged in logging, which was rafted along the river in the summer, and was exported through the winter road in winter. Also, the extraction of resin was conducted.
In 1978, the Krasnoleninsk oil and gas exploration expedition began to work in the village. She conducted deep drilling in the region in search of oil and gas. The population of Nyagan by 1979 increased to 4600 people. Soon, industrial oil was discovered in the region in the discovered Krasnoleninsky vault of the field.
Oil production center
In 1979, a construction trust and oil company was established in the village, which is still a city-forming enterprise, which began to develop the Krasnoleninsky oil and gas condensate field, with huge reserves of hydrocarbons. Nyakh became the base for enterprises involved in the development of the field. In 1982, a production association was organized. Labor resources from all regions of the country were involved in oil production. In 1985, the village of Nyakh became the city of Nyagan.
By 1989, the population of Nyagan increased by more than 10 times, at that time there were 54,061 inhabitants in the village. The village grew rapidly, new housing estates were built, the territory was improved.
The collapse of the Soviet Union had practically no effect on Nyagan, only the owner of the oil company, which became the property of TNK, changed, and since 2014, Rosneft. In the period from 1998 to 2010, the population of the city of Nyagan fluctuated slightly - it increased, then decreased mainly for natural reasons. In subsequent years, the number of residents is growing, in 2017 reaching 57 765 people.
