The aroma of jasmine is well known to many from childhood. A huge, sprawling, very beautiful bush with large star-shaped white flowers seems to beckon with its sweet, unique smell.
Caring for this plant is just a pleasure, because it does not require special attention. In order for jasmine to flourish and fill the garden with its entrancing fragrant aroma, it is important to prune, water and feed.
Jasmine (shrub): planting and care, photo, pruning
To grow a neat and beautiful plant, it is important to know and perform some agricultural practices:
- Jasmine tolerates shade well, so it can grow both in the sun and in shaded places. But a planted plant in a well-lit area will develop much faster and bloom more abundantly.
- Planting seedlings can be carried out in early spring or autumn. These are favorable periods for the rooting and development of young bushes.
- The plant is not picky about the soil, but it can open in all its glory only on fertile soil.
- Jasmine does not tolerate stagnation of water, so it is recommended to plant it on a high site or to do preliminary drainage of crushed stone and sand, gravel or broken brick with a height of at least 15 cm.
- A pit for planting a seedling is dug out at least 50 cm deep. The soil should be quite fertile. The introduction of nitrophoska (30 g) is desirable. When planting a plant, it is important to ensure that its root system in the soil is buried no more than 3 cm. The earth around the bush should be compacted and watered abundantly.
Top dressing
- Feeding garden jasmine begins to be carried out approximately one year after planting.
- Among organic fertilizers, slurry proved to be quite good. So that the jasmine bush does not receive a burn, the manure is bred with water 1 to 10. This feeding is carried out once a year. You can also use wood (birch or apple) ash. For one bush, 100 g of such fertilizer is quite enough.
- As a mineral fertilizer, you can use the following composition. Take 10 g of water: 30 g of superphosphate, 15 g of potassium sulfide and 15 g of urea. All components must be carefully mixed in a bucket of water and pour the contents under one or two bushes. A faded plant can also be fed by adding 20 g of superphosphate and 15 g of potassium to the soil.
Jasmine: Care and Trimming
When growing jasmine, pruning is an important process: it allows you to give the plant a neat and tidy appearance and helps to make the bush look healthy and lush. The first pruning is carried out immediately after planting a seedling. On the shrub remove all shoots located incorrectly, leaving only two or three branches with several strong buds. Everything else is cut out.
Jasmine is not a winter-hardy plant and needs warmth. In regions with harsher climates, the bushes freeze every winter, and many spoiled, dry branches appear on them. That is why spring pruning of jasmine is carried out after winter. It is done only with a sharp instrument. For these purposes, a high-quality pruner is perfect.
Spring pruning
Pruning jasmine in the spring is carried out before the awakening of the kidneys. This procedure contributes to a more magnificent flowering and good growth of young shoots.
In order for the plantβs crown to be beautiful, when pruning, it is necessary to remove all branches that are older than 9-10 years, as well as shoots that thicken the crown. As a rule, the correct pruning of jasmine in the spring involves the removal of very adult branches in order to free up space for young shoots. After that, the bush produces many young shoots that bloom lushly next year. The best time for spring pruning is considered the end of March - the first decade of April.
If the bush is still young and it is no more than 2-3 years old, in the spring it is necessary to remove the branches that darken the crown. Usually this pruning of jasmine is done one year after planting.
Sanitary pruning
Its goal is to remove all dry, dead, frozen shoots that could not survive the winter frosts. All sick and damaged branches that were broken by the wind are also removed. This procedure is done before the kidneys wake up and active sap flow begins.
Pruning after flowering
After flowering jasmine, it is also necessary to trim the bushes. Firstly, it helps to maintain their decorative effect in shrubs, since the purpose of this procedure is to remove wilted inflorescences. Secondly, pruning jasmine after flowering contributes to the formation of a lush bush, since all varieties of this plant, especially vigorous ones, can grow one-sided under uneven lighting.
The procedure is done with a sharp tool, while wilted flowers are cut. In this case, the processing of the cut site is not necessary. Too long shoots are cut off, spoiling the decorative crown of the bush. At the same time, you can perform another sanitary procedure. To do this, inspect the shrub, remove all weak and diseased shoots, broken branches.
Forming Cut
The height of jasmine can reach more than 2 m, while an overly tall bush often looks rather untidy. To improve the appearance of the plant, formative pruning of jasmine is carried out. It must be done throughout the growing season. When a shrub is formed, branches that are too long are trimmed, giving the plant a neat shape. Thin and weak shoots are shortened by half or a third. The purpose of this pruning is to give the desired shape to the bushes. In addition, this procedure causes the growth of new young shoots, next year on which there will be many flowers.
Formative pruning is also necessary if the plant is used as a hedge. To do this, the strongest branches are cut slightly, and thinner, on the contrary, strongly. This improves the shape of the plant and contributes to the good growth of annual shoots.
Rejuvenation
Over time, jasmine grows, its branches become bare. If the bush has become old, it is necessary to perform anti-aging pruning. You can do it throughout the season, but spring is considered the best time for this. To rejuvenate jasmine bushes, it is necessary to cut 4 or 5 trunks to 0.5 m, and cut the remaining shoots to ground level, that is, to the base. In order for the plant not to get sick with fungal diseases, all exposed sections of the slices should be treated. The best remedy for this is garden var. After anti-aging trimming, the trunk circle is mulched and fertilized with compost or mullein solution. The trimmed shrub throughout the summer period must be abundantly watered and fertilized so that it gains weight faster.
When new shoots begin to appear from sleeping buds , they must be completely removed. After anti-aging pruning, gardeners leave no more than three strong branches on a stump. This is the future basis for the new bush. The very next year the plant will gain mass, and in two or three years it will be possible to enjoy the beautiful lush flowering of a dense new bush.
Autumn pruning
In the fall, sanitary pruning of jasmine is again carried out, and too long shoots are shortened. Also, the plant begins to prepare for winter.
As a rule, adult jasmine bushes do not need any additional preparation, since they tolerate cold temperatures well. During the winter period of time, only the tops of young branches are mainly damaged, but after the spring forming pruning, the shrub quickly gains strength and is fully restored.
But it is not so easy for young plants to transfer the winter cold, so if the jasmine bush is not yet a year old, it must be covered in late autumn.
In late autumn, plants dig the soil near the trunk and fall asleep with mulch, manure, garden compost or pine needles. This is done so that the jasmine root system does not freeze.
Due to its unpretentiousness and ease of care, ease of reproduction, this plant has won the hearts of many gardeners. Adult flowering jasmine (shrub), pruning of which was considered in our article, is a hallmark of the garden. Enchanting unique aroma, plentiful beautiful flowering, snow-white, simple, double flowers attract the eyes of all passers-by. Looking at the bush, I want to stop, breathe in its delicate aroma and enjoy the magnificent beauty.
