In order for the roof of a country house to effectively perform its functions, protecting the interior of the house from adverse weather factors, it is, of course, necessary to assemble it with the exact observance of all the required technologies. Of course, during the erection of the roof, special attention should be paid to the installation of rafters, insulation and lining. But it is equally important to correctly mount various additional elements of this part of the building. For example, certain recommendations should be followed when installing the gable roof overhangs.
Appointment
Actually, the pediment is the part of the roof that encloses the attic from the street from the end facades of the building. Such structures are mounted on houses with all forms of roofs erected from any materials. In brick and block constructions, pediments can be assembled both from boards, and from the same material from which the box is built. In chopped structures, they are often made of logs or beams and serve as a continuation of the walls.
In panel houses, this element of the roof structure is almost always hemmed with a board. The pediments made using this technology are insulated with, for example, mineral wool. This is usually done when they want to equip a residential attic or attic in a country house. On the reverse side, the pediment in this case can be sheathed with OSB plates, plywood or any other sheet materials.
The roof in a country house primarily serves, of course, to protect the interior from wind, rain, dust and snow. However, the roofs of buildings perform another important function. A properly assembled roof additionally covers rain and snow and building facades.
The long walls of private houses from getting wet in bad weather protect the eaves. But the front facades and pediments remain vulnerable to precipitation. So that these parts of the building are also not wet in the rain and gable overhangs are provided on the roof. Often such designs are also complemented by a visor.
Definition
Part of the roof slopes, protruding beyond the plane of the end wall of the attic enclosing structures, is called the gable overhangs. Visors in the arrangement of such protective systems are collected along the top line of the box at the level of the eaves. In gable roofs, gable overhangs and visors form a triangle in the front plane.
Structures of this type can not only effectively protect the end of the building from rainfall. Often they are also an important architectural element of the house, giving it a more solid and presentable appearance.
Are there any guidelines
When arranging the gable roof overhangs with their own hands, they pay attention mainly only to the design of the rafter system, the material used for its sheathing, the size of the building and its architectural features. No standards are provided for the assembly of this part of the roof.
Such overhangs can be carried out outside the gables at any distance. Most often, the length of this part of the roof structure in private houses is 40-80 cm. In most cases, using any technology, the width of the gable roof overhangs is chosen equal to the length of the eaves. This allows you to assemble a more harmonious and aesthetic roof.
Arrangement Methods
Sometimes the roofs of suburban buildings are erected without gable overhangs. But in this way only roofs of country houses built in the architectural style of minimalism are mounted in this way. In all other cases, almost always gable overhangs are present in the construction of roofs of suburban buildings. At the same time, they can be equipped using the following technologies:
The first technology is usually used when light roofing materials are used for roof sheathing . This can be, for example, metal tile, professional sheet, flexible tile. It is this technology of arranging the gable roof overhangs when building country houses that is most often used. The popularity of this technique is primarily explained by the simplicity of execution and low cost. When using it, the consumption of lumber and roof cladding only slightly increases.
The dimensions of the gable roof overhangs when using this installation technology are usually not too large. They are carried out in this case most often to a distance of up to 50 cm. The disadvantage of this method is primarily that when it is used, the protective structure may subsequently sag.
When erecting very large private houses, as well as when using heavy materials for roof sheathing, overhangs are arranged on the rafters. The extended legs from the gables in this case are mounted on elongated, powerful Mauerlat, ridge supports and intermediate block elements.
Fronton overhangs of this type can go beyond the plane of the walls for a considerable distance. In most cases, when using this technology, they are 40-80 cm long. Sometimes such gable roof overhangs are also more significant. But such, protruding far beyond the end plane of the building, the structures are usually already a full roof, for example, a balcony or terrace.
Technology for arranging overhangs on the crate
In this case, the extreme rafters are located at the corners of the box of the building. When arranging the overhang, the crate is attached to them not end-to-end, but with the extension forward. Further, the roof is sheathed with the selected facing material according to standard technology.
At the next stage, the casing of the overhang is hemmed from the bottom. At the same time, the roof end is closed with a complete forceps or simply with a metal profile.
Very often, the roofs of houses, among other things, are equipped with gutters. In this case, the design of the gable overhang on the crate is somewhat complicated. In its lower part, a special frame is mounted. Subsequently, a bracket for the gutter is mounted on it.
How to make a gable roof overhang on outriggers
This technique is also used in the construction of country houses quite often. Using this technology, the length of the overhang will be equal to the extension of the rafters. The legs in this case are mounted in the usual way. After installing the rafters, the roof is insulated and waterproofed. Then the crate is stuffed and the roofing material is mounted with a binder including a gable overhang.
A feature of insulated roofs is that they are often made ventilated. Therefore, when filing such overhangs in the future, special holes are usually left for air circulation.
Sometimes in country houses use a more simplified removal of the pediment of the protective structure on the harness or Mauerlat. In this case, in the extreme plane of the overhang, boards of the same length as the rafters, but of a smaller section, are installed. With the last legs in the slope, they are connected by several crossbeams.
Using this technique, less durable structures are obtained than when applying the technology of removal of rafters. However, this method still allows you to save a little on the material.
At the final stage, when applying such a technique, the frontal overhang of the roof is also finished with the end plate. This element allows you to protect the board or rafters from adverse environmental influences. An end plate for a gable overhang can be made, for example, from a profiled sheet. Stuff it using self-tapping screws.
How can overhangs be hemmed
To mask the rafters and the lathing from the bottom of the gable overhangs, it is allowed to use different materials. Do the skin of this roof element :
lumber;
PVC panels;
PVC siding (spotlights);
flat metal;
wall siding;
profiled sheet.
In some cases, the gable roof overhangs are left unstitched. This is what happens when building, for example, small summer cottages. Also, sometimes overhangs mask only the crate. This technology helps to make the appearance of the roof complete and at the same time original.
The use of lumber
Most often, the gable roof overhangs of country houses are hemmed with wood. In most cases, a lining or just a trimmed board is used for this purpose. In the latter case, since the tree is able to expand and contract due to moisture differences, the material is not mounted closely, but sparse. The distance between the overhang cladding boards should be about 4 mm. Subsequently, these slots will also play the role of ventilation holes.
When lining, the lining is also mounted using a special technology. The tongues of the lamellas in this case are not driven into the grooves completely. Of course, before starting the binder procedure, lumber is necessarily treated with fire-fighting and antiseptic compounds. This can significantly extend the life of the cladding and reduce the risk of fire.
PVC application
In small houses (for example, summer cottages), the sheathing of the gable roof overhangs can be made including the usual hollow plastic panels. This method of facing is currently considered the cheapest. They are attached to the elements of the rafter system and the gable of the PVC panel in this case in the usual way - using self-tapping screws. The disadvantage of this kind of binder is primarily the low strength of the material. In addition, PVC panels are not recommended to trim the overhangs on the south side of the house. Unfortunately, this material does not differ in resistance to UV radiation. In the sun, such panels will quickly collapse.
Spotlights are a more expensive, but at the same time reliable option for covering overhangs. So called PVC lamellas, designed for use on the street. At the moment, this is the most modern kind of binder for the gable roof overhang. In the photo below you can see just such an option for facing the ledges of the ramps in a private house. Such material is more durable than panels. In addition, it is insensitive to solar radiation.
Perforated spotlights exist on the market today. This option for today may be considered the best answer to the question of how to sew up the gable roof overhangs. When using such panels there is no need for additional arrangement of ventilation openings.
Using siding and profiled sheet
This material is durable and aesthetically pleasing. Hemming the gable roof overhangs with siding is usually done when the same cladding was used to decorate other building envelopes.
Profiled and ordinary metal sheets can also be considered a good option for covering the protective end protrusion of the roof. This material is strong and durable, not afraid of temperature changes. The profiled sheet and ordinary metal are attached to the roof structures when sheathing overhangs for self-tapping screws with rubber gaskets.
Some disadvantage of finishing the gable roof overhangs using siding and steel sheet is that in this case, the ventilation holes have to be cut independently. Unfortunately, materials for this variety, designed specifically for covering overhangs, do not exist today.
Do-it-yourself frontal overhang of the roof with spotlights
Next, for an example, consider the methodology for lowering overhangs with PVC slats. This material is relatively new on the market. However, he had already managed to gain quite a lot of popularity among summer residents. Lining the overhangs with other materials is approximately the same technology.
So, what is the method of filing the gable roof overhangs with spotlights? Lining is performed using such UV-resistant panels as follows:
on both sides of the overhang, special profiles are attached to the self-tapping screws, complete with spotlights;
plastic lamellas are cut into pieces 15 mm wide less than the distance between the profiles;
chopped pieces are attached on both sides to the profiles with screws.
When filing the gable roof overhangs with boards instead of a profile, rails are usually used. Using these same elements, PVC panels, siding, and profiled sheets can be mounted. Also, a metal profile is often used to fasten such materials.
Visor mounting
So, how to make and how to hem the gable roof overhang, we found out. Such roof end constructions usually protect against rainfall very well. But the wall during the rain, if present, can still get wet. To protect it, it is therefore often additionally arranged, including the end visor. This element can be mounted, for example, on mini rafters.
The visor assembly technology in this case will look as follows:
from a thick board pieces are cut off with a length equal to the width of the future peak;
cut pieces are mounted at an angle to the front posts of the roof frame or to the harness;
from the bars, supports for the rafters of the desired length are cut out (depending on the angle of the visor);
at the ends of the bars grooves are cut with a width equal to the thickness of the mini rafters;
mini rafters are fixed in the grooves of the props with self-tapping screws;
the other end of the supports is attached to the wall of the house.
Next, on the mini rafters, the crate is packed in two rows. For its installation, a rather thick board is usually used. In the future, builders will walk along the visor when sheathing the pediment.
The ends of the battens are additionally screwed to the gable overhang. At the final stage, the visor is trimmed. Most often, this element is faced with the same material that was used to finish the roof.
In order for water to flow into the gap between the visor and the structures of the building during operation, it is also advisable to install an apron made of galvanized iron in this place . They usually fasten such an ebb to the pediment and the crate of the visor. At the same time, a rubber gasket is placed under each screw for tightness.
