Among the heat-insulating materials with high water and vapor impermeability, polystyrene foam can be distinguished. Technical characteristics of PSB-S 35 make it possible to use it even in places with a high level of humidity.
Material Features
Polyfoam is a white sheet with a small weight. If we talk about the PSB-S without pressure, then it looks like small balls interconnected. It includes up to 98% of air. Despite this, the technical characteristics of PSB-S 35 remain at their best.
The abbreviation is deciphered as follows. The letters "PS" mean "polystyrene". The letter “B” is “non-pressurized”, “C” is “self-extinguishing”. Numbers mean maximum density. In this case, the specific gravity of the material is in the range of 25-35 kg / m 3 .
PSB-S 35 is able to withstand high loads. In this case, the plate does not sag, does not move. Polyfoam does not absorb water. Due to this, it does not change its size and shape. The mechanical, heat-insulating and technical characteristics of PSB-S 35 do not change throughout the entire life cycle.
Advantages and disadvantages
Among the positive qualities of the material are:
- Vapor tightness.
- Does not absorb water.
- It is ecologically safe.
- Prevents the development of mold and fungi.
- It does not rot.
- Does not react with acids, weak alkalis, alcohol and salts.
- Does not react with components of concrete mixtures and other similar building materials.
- Flammable, as it is flame retardant.
- It is light in weight.
- It is convenient to work during installation (easy to cut without dust).
- Long service life (over 35 years).
It has a plate PSB-S 35 and its shortcomings. They are few in comparison with the merits. The main disadvantage of the material is its ability to release toxic substances during combustion, which are very dangerous for human health. In addition, the foam is destroyed by solvents and materials based on bitumen. Expanded polystyrene is a good habitat for rodents (mice, rats, and so on).
Specifications PSB-S 35
Expanded polystyrene is produced in the form of rectangular sheets of standard sizes. So, the length varies from 900 to 5000 mm. Moreover, the increase in value occurs with an interval of 50 mm. Width is 500-1300 mm (pitch - 50 mm). The thickness of the material varies in increments of 10 mm and is in the range of 20-500 mm.
Among other technical data, there are:
- The density is in the range of 25.1-35.0 kg / m 3 .
- Material burns for less than 4 seconds.
- Humidity - up to 12%.
- For a day, the material absorbs no more than 2% of the volume.
- The ultimate value of bending strength is 0.25 MPa.
- The compressive strength is 0.14 MPa.
One of the main parameters, which provides a wide range of applications, is the ability of the foam to retain heat. The thermal conductivity of PSB-S 35 is at a very low level and is no more than 0.038 W / (m * K), which is typical for a dry state.
Application area
Expanded polystyrene PSB-S 35 due to its technical characteristics is perfectly suitable for use in regions with severe climatic conditions. With its help, insulation of the foundation, basement, basement, pipelines (and other communications located underground), roofs (both flat and gable) is carried out. But the main area of application is thermal insulation of walls and floors (including with a heating system).
The material is used in a wide temperature range - from minus 200 to plus 85 degrees. In places with very high temperatures, the use of polystyrene is prohibited.
Polyfoam is easily cut with a conventional knife in any direction. In addition, it reduces vibration during transportation, thereby protecting the goods. Therefore, it is widely used as packaging material. It is used for packaging breakable goods (glass, ceramics), electronics and so on.
Manufacturers and prices
Among the most popular manufacturers supplying PSB-S 35 polystyrene foam to the Russian market, three companies can be distinguished:
- Mosstroy-31.
- LLC NovoPlast.
- CJSC ET-Plast.
The quality of the material from these manufacturers is time-tested. The cost of 1 cubic meter of foam for each of them is 3300, 3300 and 3115 rubles, respectively.
Mounting Features
Thermal insulation of the walls will be performed efficiently, taking into account a few simple points. First you need to choose the right material. You should not buy polystyrene, which is stored outdoors. Expanded polystyrene should be white, without spots and burnt areas. The plate is elastic and soft. Her balls are about the same in diameter.
Plates are mounted on previously prepared surfaces. So, the walls need to be leveled and primed, which will protect against the appearance of mold (and fungus). To fix the plates use glue. Sheets are laid according to the principle of brickwork, that is, between the three sheets, the seams form the shape of the letter "T". The glue should dry for several days (depending on the weather).
After the glue has completely dried, polystyrene foam is fixed with the help of "umbrellas" (dowels with a very large hat). Initially, holes are prepared into which dowels are inserted. “Umbrellas” are driven inside. Umbrellas and dowels are chosen plastic, since metal ones let in cold. This stage of work is carried out in order to increase the reliability of the wall and foam connection.
The next step involves gluing a reinforcing mesh. This is done with an adhesive that completely covers the mesh. The mesh rolls over the entire surface of the wall. Its individual parts overlap. Particular attention is paid to corners. The glue should completely hide the mesh. After drying, the wall is sanded with sandpaper. The surface should be flat.
Next, a layer of putty is applied. After it dries, the wall is primed. On this surface is considered ready for application of the finish coating. It can be paints, wallpapers and any other materials.
Expanded polystyrene PSB-S 35 can be considered a universal material, which has found its application as a heat and sound insulation layer in the construction of buildings and structures for various purposes. The material is used in regions with different climatic conditions.
