Common eye diseases in cats

Cat eyes give her the opportunity to receive basic information about the world around her. They are a unique and rather complicated system. The field of view of a cat is more than 180 degrees. The visual acuity of her is six times greater than human, which allows the cat to clearly distinguish objects at a distance of one hundred meters. Do not forget about the ability to see almost in total darkness.

But, unfortunately, eye diseases in cats are not uncommon. One of the most common diseases is injuries that animals receive as a result of a showdown. They are very dangerous because chlamydia live under the cat's claws, which easily penetrate the depths of the tissue through damage. In some cases, even timely contact with specialists does not help. If the infection penetrated deep into the corneal tissue, then a serious illness such as panophthalmitis may occur, when the eye practically turns into an abscess. In this case, eye removal cannot be avoided, it is good that this does not happen very often.

Eye diseases in cats are sometimes associated with a particular breed. So the Persians often have corneal ulcers. Due to the anatomical features, the cornea is quite loose and the eyelids do not close completely, so a tear cannot completely wash the cornea. As a result, ulcers appear, which are closed by a substance in the tear - epinephril and necrosis (sequestration) of the cornea occurs. It looks like a brown spot that grows into the cornea.

The most common eye diseases in cats are conjunctivitis, which can be viral, infectious, and allergic. In the treatment of this disease, it is important to establish the cause of its occurrence. This is necessary to prescribe the correct treatment. The disease is contagious, so if there are other animals in the house, then the sick cat should be isolated. Do not forget about personal hygiene - you need to wash your hands very carefully after contact with a sick animal.

Often in cats there is an inversion of the eyelids - when its edges are wrapped inward. Sometimes there is an eversion, when the eyelid turns out. In this case, the animal often squint, the conjunctiva turns red, severe lacrimation is observed. Such eye diseases in cats can be congenital or result from a burn or injury.

Some eye diseases in cats can be easily treated at home. For example, if a grain of sand gets into your eye or some small object is often enough, ordinary washing with boiled water, or strong tea, of course, not hot. But basically, if there are eye diseases in cats - the treatment should be prescribed by a veterinarian. Self-treatment without a correctly diagnosed diagnosis can lead to disastrous results. You will not only not help your pet, but, possibly, cause serious harm to his health. Often, the owner, having begun independent treatment, having seen that a significant improvement has come, stops it. But it turns out that the disease continued to progress, only in a latent form. And when suddenly a sharp deterioration sets in, it happens that even good specialists cannot help.

To treat cats, veterinarians prescribe eye drops, antihistamines and antiviral drugs, and antibiotics that are applied topically. If the disease is severe, then pills and injections are prescribed. In some cases, eye diseases in cats are treated surgically. This is necessary if cataracts or glaucoma are detected, serious injuries resulting from injuries, etc. Microsurgical interventions are sometimes performed. For the prevention of eye diseases, proper care and limitation of contact with sick animals, especially stray ones, are necessary.
