Do-it-yourself barn from corrugated board: installation, instructions, tips

A barn, or a non-residential building for storing household equipment, usually without heating, is indispensable for any private house. It is inconvenient to store most of the tools, garden and garden tools in the house. First of all, due to debris and dirt, which, one way or another, remain on it even after cleaning. Using a specially equipped room for storage helps to accurately position the existing tool and to avoid debris entering the apartment building.

The barn is no different from any other building and has the required standard elements: foundation, walls and roof. But its main difference is a simpler design. This allows you to use building materials that are usually not used for a residential building. First of all, a profiled sheet. A barn from corrugated board (the most common name) is the best option for building an utility room.

What is corrugated board?

This material is a sheet of metal made of galvanized steel, which undergoes mandatory profiling to give rigidity. The finished product has a corrugated surface in the form of a wave or trapezoid and may additionally contain a polymer or other coating. Despite the invention back in 1820, it became relatively popular recently, mainly due to the varied color gamut of the coating and low cost.

It is widely used in the construction of fences, mainly fences, walls and roofs of non-residential premises. For example, you can make a shed from corrugated board. Issued sheets may vary:

  • by appointment (wall or roofing);
  • in the shape of the corrugation and its height (from 8 to 57 mm);
  • by sheet thickness (from 0.4 to 1.0 mm);
  • by type of coating applied and its thickness;
  • by dimensions.

When choosing a sheet, thickness, type and coating layer are critical.

Advantages of corrugated board

If you build a shed from corrugated board, you can get a number of significant advantages:

  1. Simple installation that does not require a special tool. This allows you to build a barn from a professional flooring with your own hands to almost any person.
  2. Guaranteed protection against moisture and other precipitation due to polymer coating and galvanized steel.
  3. Low weight, reducing the requirements for the foundation of the barn and the frame.
  4. The ability to fit as much as possible into the interior of the site due to a wide range of colors.

The only disadvantages of using a professional sheet are:

  1. The increased sound transmission when using it for the construction of the roof, which is not particularly important for the utility room.
  2. Loss of protective anticorrosive properties when the protective layer is damaged, which can be prevented by eliminating potential mechanical threats (objects or branches).

How to build a barn yourself

To build a shed from corrugated board, you must strictly adhere to the sequence of actions and have a minimal tool. The sequence of work is typical for the construction of any other object in a somewhat simplified form. There are several main steps:

  • development of the construction drawing and calculation of the estimate;
  • selection and clearing of a place;
  • foundation preparation;
  • installation of the frame of the future building;
  • roof installation;
  • fixing corrugated board;
  • door and window installation and interior decoration.

Following this sequence, the question "how to build a shed from corrugated board" can be considered resolved.

Drawing, estimate and material selection

Before starting work, the dimensions of the future barn should be calculated taking into account the intended use, the size of the tool and other items that will be stored there. After this, it is necessary to make a drawing on which to reflect the location of walls, doors or windows. Further, on the basis of the dimensions, it is desirable to prepare a skeleton diagram of the future construction, on which the locations of the support and strapping racks will be marked. This will greatly simplify the calculation of the necessary building materials and the installation process, which are done in the next step.

To assemble the frame, you can use a metal profile or bar. The use of timber will be cheaper, in addition, it is much easier to work with a tree. The metal frame is considered more reliable, and the structure, if it was assembled on bolts and not welded, can be easily disassembled if necessary.

A wooden beam can be a cross section of 100 by 100 mm; for a metal profile, a cross section of 20 by 40 mm is sufficient. It is desirable to choose a rectangular shape, this will simplify the fastening of corrugated board.

For self-assembly, especially if the experience of such work is insignificant, it is recommended to use only wood for the frame.

Site preparation and foundation pouring

The choice of location depends on several factors:

  • remoteness from home;
  • the presence of fertile land under the shed;
  • the location of other buildings on the site.

Typically, the choice of the location of the shed occurs at the stage of preparation of the drawing and measurements. The selected place must be cleaned and, depending on the type of foundation, remove part of the top layer.

For the structure of corrugated board, you can use a strip or column foundation, since the whole structure has a small weight, but you can also make monolithic. In this case, the foundation may be the floor. In two other options, the floor will need to be done, although there are buildings where its role is played by ordinary land.

The foundation preparation process necessarily includes the installation of formwork, reinforcement and concrete pouring. If a columnar foundation is used, the supports are located around the entire perimeter and additionally along long walls, usually after 2 or 3 meters. For tape and monolithic pouring occurs around the perimeter.

Frame mounting

The construction of the frame begins with the installation of the lower harness, which acts as the basis for the uprights and the future floor. The beam is fixed using the "thorn-groove" method, a simple hacksaw, an ax and a hammer are enough for this, and additionally fastened with metal corners or bolts. If there is a floor in the shed, the transverse bars are installed in a similar way with a pitch of 40 or 50 cm, which are then sewn up with a board.

On the resulting frame, supporting posts from a bar are installed, are set according to the level and fixed by the upper harness. Fastening is carried out in a similar way: long screws, twisted at an angle, metal corners or bolts.

Racks are installed in increments of not more than 1 meter. During the assembly of the frame, the door and window openings are separately installed.

Roof installation

The roof of the shed from corrugated board can be made in two ways:

  • with one slope, in this case one of the walls should be higher than the other to create an angle of at least 30 Β°;
  • with two slopes, for this the height of the walls is the same.

Regardless of the option chosen, the rafters are first installed on which the crate from the boards is attached. It can be continuous or with a gap. Before fixing the corrugated board, it is necessary to put any waterproofing material. This will not only prevent moisture from entering during rainfall during the year, but also prevent condensation that forms on the surface of the metal.

For the roof, it is advisable to purchase a special roofing profiled sheet, which differs in structure from the wall, however, and costs an average of 50% more. If a gable roof is mounted, an ridge is additionally purchased to close the joint of the sheets.

Fixing corrugated board

Fastening is carried out by special self-tapping screws with a drill at the end (for the passage of metal) and a rubber gasket. Their length should be at least 35 mm longer than the sheet wave. It is worthwhile to pay attention to the purpose of the screws, since they are for mounting both in metal and in wood. A self-tapping screw is usually twisted to the bottom of the wave of sheets, which are installed with a lap. The magnitude of the formed overlap and the distance between the screws is equal to one wave.

Installation is carried out from the long sides of the barn using a wall sheet. If the structure has a single-pitch roof, each sheet must be cut with a grinder to obtain a wedge-shaped shape.

After fixing them on the walls of the shed, waterproofing is laid between the support posts and, if desired, heat-insulating material, usually mineral wool.

The door frame is assembled from a bar and sheathed with a wall sheet. An insulator can also be placed inside. If windows are planned in the barn, they can be made of glass or polycarbonate.

Inside, the easiest way is to sew up the room with plywood or OSB boards. But if desired, inexpensive plastic can also be used for walls.

Cost of work

As you can see, figuring out how to make a shed from corrugated board is not difficult. Simple fastenings and familiar materials. With some skill, even one person can do the job. If you seek the help of specialists to make a shed from corrugated board, the price per square meter on average will be about 250 rubles, plus the foundation preparation will be added to this separately. As a result, it makes sense to do the work on your own and to save the best quality material with the money saved.

In addition, any self-made building brings an unforgettable feeling of satisfaction.
