Ondulin: what is it and what is it used for?

What is ondulin?

This building material was developed in France by Ondulin. What it is, you can understand if you give a more detailed description. Ondulin is a sheer-like web made from components such as distilled bitumen, cellulose fiber, mineral fillers and resin. The production of this roofing material is based on the use of the latest technologies, while the paintings are processed with a bitumen composition in two stages, after which they are painted with acrylic paints. The advantages of ondulin include its characteristics:

  • light weight of the canvas;
  • resistance to various influences (moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet rays, petroleum products and others);
  • environmental friendliness;
  • resistance to reproduction of mold and fungus;
  • low cost and ease of installation.

  • Matte canvas, which has a rough surface. The disadvantage of this type is the accumulation of small debris and dust.
  • The glossy sheet has a smooth and bright surface. One of the negative properties of this coating is its smoothness, due to which snow leaves the roof in layers, so the installation of special tools is recommended. Also, flammability and fading in the sun can be called disadvantages of this roofing raw material.

Installation of Ondulin

Ondulin roofing material is easy to assemble. The work procedure consists of the following steps:

  1. The performance of the crate. For this, it is recommended to use bars with a size of 40 x 60 mm. In this case, the step between them depends on the value of the roof slope: at an angle of 10–15 °, a value of not more than 45 cm is used, and with a slope of more than 15 °, up to 61 cm. The bars are fixed with self-tapping screws about 8 cm.
  2. Layout styling. You can use a pencil and a centimeter tape. To adjust the sheets, use a hacksaw and lubricate the slices with oil to avoid jamming of the blade.
  3. How to stack ondulin? These works are recommended to be carried out starting from the left side. At the same time, it is better to create an overlap of no more than 3 sheets at the corner junction. To do this, the second row begins with a canvas cut into two longitudinal parts.
  4. The fixture of the material is carried out using nails (20 pieces per sheet).
  5. The implementation of the ridge element, tongs, apron and other additional devices. These parts can be purchased complete with roofing material.
  6. The joints with the valley, cornice, etc. can be glued with a special tape, which will create additional waterproofing.
