Who does not know this poem of the famous master of the word Sergey Yesenin? Like a grove from his own verse, Sergei Alexandrovich also dissuaded him on December 28, 1925. Talk about what Yesenin’s death really was does not stop until today. Was it suicide, as written in the death record? Or nevertheless, with the help of ill-wishers, the Russian poet said goodbye to life?
Suicide
According to police officers and medical examiners who investigated this case, an act of suicide was committed. The recollections of some friends who were with the poet in his last days also point to this. Information about alcohol abuse by Yesenin is not a secret. As a result of alcoholism, frequent mental disorders forced him to agree to inpatient treatment in a psychiatric clinic at the 1st Moscow State University at the end of November. A surprise for everyone was the sudden discharge of Sergey Alexandrovich on December 21. Three days later, he left for St. Petersburg, where he stayed at the Angleterre Hotel. On December 23, Wolf Erlich came to visit the poet , to whom he first handed over the text of the verse "Goodbye, my friend, goodbye." He saw Yesenin last. On December 28, Elizabeth Ustinova, the wife of a well-known journalist, came with an invitation to visit Yesenin, and then Erlich came. Nobody stubbornly opened the door. Suspecting something was amiss, they called the hotel administration. Opening the door, everyone saw the poet’s corpse suspended from the heating pipe. Yesenin's sudden death shocked everyone, perhaps because of this, so many rumors were born. Forensic expert Alexander Gilyarevsky so decided the cause of death: how to compress the airways due to hanging. All examinations and preparation of relevant documents were carried out in the presence of witnesses. It was also found that a dent on the forehead of the deceased is a result of contact with the heating pipe. A dent over the right eye was formed from contact with a hot pipe, and as a result, the skin dried and wrinkled.
During the
investigative experiment , 7 casts of the poet’s head were made, on the basis of which these conclusions were drawn. The mental disorder of the deceased confirms the medical report of March 24, 1924, of the psychiatric clinic of the 1st MSU.
Murder
The secret of Yesenin’s death has not yet been solved. Many opponents of the government insist on the murder of the poet. And besides, they find a lot of arguments about this. Firstly, Yesenin’s death is in no way connected with the verse dedicated to Wolf Erich. The mother of the Russian poet, Tatyana Fedorovna claims that the poem "Goodbye, my friend, goodbye" was created a few months before his death. And there is nothing suicidal in it, since the lines were dedicated to Alexei Ganin, a friend of Yesenin, who was sentenced to death. The only question is: why devote such a sad verse to a friend who is expecting death? Another inconsistency is that Yesenin’s death is not confirmed by any papers other than several acts and protocols of inquiries. There are no documents describing the scene of the incident and conducting investigative experiments. In addition, supporters of this point of view regard the spot on the right eyelid as a trace of a bullet.
In January 1926, the death case was already closed, and not a single document was added to the case. Sergei Yesenin, whose death occurred on December 25, 1925, was an open person and friends did not notice any change in behavior.
No true reason has yet been found. So can leave alone a master of a beautiful word, a true craftsman, not only to write, but also to think metaphorically? Proponents of suicide do not take into account the facts cited by others, and the latter, in turn, do not accept the evidence of the former. Perhaps it is better to leave Yesenin’s death alone, whatever it may be? It is better to give him a calm rest in the afterlife, and we continue to enjoy his poems in this world.
