The name of Lake Pskov
In fact, Lake Pskov has several names. In most cases, it is called Chudsk-Pskov. This is due to the proximity of the city of Pskov, as well as the fact that a very long time ago the lake was called the Old Russian word with the root "chud". Some tribes (Ests, Finno-Ugrians and some others) were called at that time “wonderful people”, that is, those who were not like the others. And precisely because these people lived here, the lake was dubbed in this way.
Other names are also found: Peypsi-yarv and Peypus. They all have their own story.
Pskov lake in history
In ancient chronicles, this territory is mentioned as the area in which the Battle of the Ice took place. Here Alexander Nevsky defended his land from enemy attacks. According to ancient records, the battle took place in early April 1242. The exact place of the event was mentioned here: "On Lake Peipsi, on Uzmen, near Voronei Kameni." This record was made by one of the participants in the battle, that is, information was received, one might say, firsthand. But what does she mean?
“On Lake Peipsi” is a common reference point, that is, the place where the “wonderful” people lived. The expression “on Uzmen” explains the narrowness of the strait. But the third designation, “Voronei has stones,” speaks of the specific place of the ongoing battle.
Flora and fauna
