His mother, Ekaterina Osipovna, gave birth to a boy from Emanuel Levenson, in whose family she worked as a servant. The father refused them, and the mother and her sons moved to Odessa, where the childhood of the then-unknown writer, who was then called Nikolai, passed.

In the 60s, Chukovsky began retelling for the children of the Bible. Several writers took up this project under his leadership, despite the anti-religious policies of the government.
