History of occurrence
Zoological Museum (St. Petersburg) was opened in 1838. The development of the institution began with the Kunstkamera. In 1896, the museum was located in the warehouse building. There, in 1901, an exhibition hall was opened. From 1930-1931 in the building created the Zoological Institute. The architect of the building was Lucini. All exhibits presented in the halls are updated and arranged in accordance with the zoological hierarchy. Here you can see almost all groups of the animal world of the planet, ranging from invertebrates to amphibians and reptiles. There is a large collection of mammals and birds. The museum houses as many as nearly 40,000 exhibits.
The most interesting exhibits of the museum
- A huge stuffed anaconda, which was purchased from A. Seba (naturalist) in 1716.
- The largest skeleton of a blue whale (its length is 27 m).
- Sea Pen was mined from the North Pole-6 station.
- Scarecrow "Steller's Cow". I must say that this animal has disappeared recently.
And the whole world knows the collection of mammoth fauna, which belongs to the museum. This exposition includes a scarecrow from the Berezovsky mammoth, which was found in the Berezovka river. Here you can see the mummy of the mammoth cub, male, female. The exhibits are presented of the skeleton, extremities and other parts of the body of a woolly rhino perfectly preserved in permafrost. The exhibition also used dioramas. In them, animals are represented in their natural habitat. These exhibition complexes are considered an example of painting and the original technique of sculptural taxidermy.
