Zapona is beautiful and practical

Zapona is an item of women's wardrobe among the Eastern Slavs. Archaeologists are still debating what to call this word:

  1. A piece of cotton or linen folded in half with a cutout for the head.
  2. The usual apron.

Scientists are more inclined to option number 1.

The first mention of clothing zapone dated to the beginning of the XI century. In common people, this word is called aprons, bibs, work shirts.

Unlike the Western Slavic peoples, in whom it was customary to adorn everyday dresses only to girls of marriageable age, in Russia women often wore painted and embroidered clothes. Picturesque aprons were worn at home, and simple and not bright fabrics were chosen for street work. Zapona is an accessory that must be tied up. As the belt used as the most ordinary long rags, and expensive leather belts. But widespread aprons were worn freely.

The word "zapon" comes from the Slavic verb "zapati" in the meaning of "close". Initially, the cloak was intended solely for protection. As an object for decorating the outfit, cufflinks began to be used much later.

But recently, in stores, similar things began to be found, decorated with traditional patterns. Or sewn from flax, which has always been considered a protective material from diseases, ailments and the evil eye.

Many brands use the ideas of the ancient Russian people, using Slavic motifs for decoration. It is easy to find familiar ornaments and embroidery in clothes, to see the famous cabbage principle of layering.
