Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region of China located in the northern part of the country. Its area is about 1.2 million km2, and the population is about 25 million people. This territorial-administrative unit occupies only a small part of the PRC, but it is larger than Germany and France combined. The capital of Inner Mongolia is Hohhot, and the largest city is Baotou.
Back in the 10th century, this territory was inhabited by Mongols, freedom-loving and independent nomadic tribes. In 1636, the lands were seized by manchures and they were included in China, it was then that the name came - Inner Mongolia. In 1912, the region administratively became part of China, since Outer Mongolia was proclaimed an independent state. As an autonomous region, it has been operating since May 1, 1947.
