The style of the nineties will be recognized by everyone who is "lucky" to find this period. Its characteristic features periodically penetrate into modern fashion. The most popular motto of that time was the phrase: "Be yourself," so all the mods tried to follow it, not paying attention to anyone. It was a time of desire for self-expression and freedom, which was reflected in makeup, hairstyles and clothes.
As the trends are gradually returning, let us consider in more detail what the fashion of the 90s in Russia was and highlight the main signs of the era.
Grunge style
What it is? Grunge is characterized by massive heavy boots, biked shirts with elongated sleeves, jackets, leather jackets, sneakers, ripped jeans, and in the female version - baggy men's trousers and dimensionless sweaters. All this came from designer Marc Jacobs, who on the catwalk in the 90s presented a collection that included plaid shirts, specially messy sweaters, crumpled dresses, and asymmetrically faded t-shirts.
Denim
Denim was considered the "latest fashion" in the 90s. And we are talking not only about skirts, shorts and trousers, but also about anything: sundresses, overalls, jackets. And the most beloved and popular were shoes, accessories and bags with denim or denim.
The nineties were the era of not only grunge, but also hippies, military, sports style and minimalism. And in all these styles, denim played a key role. People had a special sympathy for "dumplings." To do this, jeans tied in several knots were cooked in large pots with bleach and soda. It is not worth describing the unpleasant pungent smell that stood after this in the apartments, but the mods of the 80-90s remember it to this day. But the result was worth it.
Bright accessories
Rings, bracelets, large colored earrings could be woven from threads, metal, wooden, plastic. A very catchy sign of that time was a necklace made of plastic threads (a prototype of a choker) and plastic badges. I said goodbye to the image of an exclusively sporting attribute, another fashion accessory then - a colored knitted headband. She could be worn with a tail, under a pile and just with her hair loose. By the way, in fashion were huge fleece, perms and bangs, which fashionistas twisted inward and abundantly sprayed with hair spray.
Sports attributes
Bomber jackets (the notorious "olympics"), trousers with stripes and sneakers came into fashion. Such clothes were boldly mixed with more neutral dresses or jeans.
Prints
In the 90s , things were in fashion (photo below) with prints, and the brighter the better. The inscriptions in English and animal prints were especially fond: tiger, zebra, leopard.
The most fashionable T-shirts and dresses were always printed. In addition to the inscriptions, images of cartoon characters were popular in Russia: Bugs Bunny, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, and after the release of the movie Titanic, shops and markets were flooded with tops and T-shirts with images of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Neon colors
Probably, there is nothing more contrasting in terms of colors than the fashion of the 90s. Clothing (photo below) looked bright: purple, bright orange, canary, fuchsia, light green - no, these were not colors exclusively for parties, such things could well be worn every day. And not only women, but also men.
Broad shoulders
In the fashion of the 90s, clothes with voluminous broad shoulders were in trend. It was as if she specially emphasized the bottom covered with leggings. The cut of jackets and jackets suggested the presence of voluminous shoulder pads. Every fashionista dreamed of having at least one such jacket.
Mini
It seemed that miniskirts of the 60-70s should go into oblivion, but it wasn’t there: they not only remain popular (and are worn with fishnet tights), but they also give rise to other “mini-things”: shorts and even T-shirts (those same "topics"). Almost all girls wore all this, regardless of the length and harmony of their legs.
Women's fashion
Fashion of the 90s girls dictated their own rules: they had to look defiant and sexy by any means. To calmly wear jeans of such styles and bright colors, women had to be in shape. Shaping is becoming very popular, and many of them preferred "bicycles", leggings, out of clothes. Although they all wore them in a row, and not all of these ladies thought about how they looked on their figure.
If you evaluate the quality of the war paint characteristic of the girls of the nineties, it becomes clear that they tried to imitate our stars and Madonna. Leggings and leggings of breathtaking colors were worn with dresses-t-shirts, tunics, denim mini-skirts and even a coat.
Both adults and children adored sweaters. As a rule, the female sweater at that time was from Angora, and the neck was made as a collar. They were decorated with sequins, beads, beads or embroidered flowers. In the 90s, oversize was in fashion, so the girls tried to find large sweaters in stores, and if they didn’t find them, they bought what they had and stretched them themselves!
They mixed such a voluminous sweater with colored tights or leggings. If a girl was wearing a huge oversized cloak, it was completely impossible to guess what figure was underneath. But if you look at it on the other hand, if you don’t find your size in the store, you could take the largest cloak - baggy fashion allowed it.
As mentioned earlier, the makeup of the 90s in the truest sense of the word could be called “war paint”. It was perfectly normal for a celebrity and a woman on the periphery to paint brightly and brightly. The emphasis was on everything: both eyes and lips. Dark lipstick, colored eyeliner, eyeshadow with mother of pearl, narrow eyebrows, like strings - this is makeup in the style of the 90s. No one thought about the fact that you need to highlight one thing - either eyes or lips. Decorated all at once, but brighter.
Men's fashion
Men's fashion of the 90s was also very specific. A must have for any man of the nineties - a sweater with an ornament. In such a sweater they went at least wherever: you can have a rest outside the city, or you can go to work, combining with jeans or dress pants. And the most daring could wear it even with sweatpants!
The trousers and jeans for men themselves were quite wide. Of particular sympathy for men were "bananas" with elastic and strict trousers that had folds at the waist. Men's fashion of the 90s (photo in the article) was not as defiant as women's.
It was fashionable to show their rebellious spirit, so the style icons were Yuri Shevchuk, Viktor Tsoi, Igor Talkov and, of course, foreign rock idols such as Kurt Cobain with his grunge negligence: plaid shirts, voluminous sweaters, ripped jeans and stretched stale shirts.
Fashionable men's accessories of those years were considered an electronic watch with a metal strap and a man purse. Richer people preferred to show their wealth with rings and massive gold chains.
Men of the nineties massively fans of sportswear. And this was far from always a manifestation of a great love for sports. Clothing or a training suit with the logo of Nike, Adidas, Reebok (most often bought cheaply in the nearest market) have become a part of the image for every day.
Shoes - sneakers or sneakers. In addition to "value" and convenience, tracksuits were popularized thanks to the spread of the "criminal wave" among the population. In the 1990s, wrestlers, boxers and other martial artists were united in groups to earn money by any means. Someone wanted to imitate these strong guys, someone was afraid, and the girls dreamed about how they become wives of "romantics from the high road." Laughter, laughter, and this all increased the popularity of tracksuits.
In winter, young people dressed in down jackets, which were incredibly uncomfortable, heavy and thick. Well, in the fall and spring, men flaunted their might and main in leather jackets, under which all the same tracksuits were hidden.
The main fashion trendsetter of the nineties was the Versace design house, which presented in 1992 its new collection: gray trousers and raspberry jackets. An unprecedented combination has spread very quickly. Very quickly, bright jackets began to be produced at Russian factories, and not only in China. Raspberry jacket symbolized the status of "master of life", a successful person. Designers tried to offer other color options - green, red, yellow, but they did not cause such a reaction.
"New Russians" immediately began to support the legendary brand, but they dressed in an underground stitched copy, and not in the original. The wardrobe could be changed depending on the situation: sweatpants could replace trousers, but the jacket remained unchanged. Men wore classic shoes and then trendy shoes with a pointed toe.
The direct opposite of the flashy trends of the youth men’s fashion of the nineties was business suits with an extended shoulder line. Despite all their officiality and severity, these costumes looked unpresentable on men accustomed to wearing democratic ensembles. Important details in the image of a businessman from the 90s were a large gold chain around his neck and an electronic wristwatch.
Everything that men's fashion of the 90s was famous for was possible to find thanks to farmers, small dealers in shoes, clothes and accessories of fakes of famous brands. Such traders in foreign things were visible from afar - they put on only the most “stylish” to show what they were rich in.
