Leather Cloak: A Story

The story of the appearance of a leather coat is incredibly interesting and fascinating. From ancient times it was believed that this element of the wardrobe was designed to protect against wind and rain. Cloaks, like modern cloaks, were worn by both the northern peoples in order to warm themselves in the cold, and the inhabitants of the south.

The first such "mantle" appeared in the XIV-XII centuries BC. Then the ancient people covered themselves with the skins of wild animals. The likeness of a cloak (mantle) began to be used four thousand years ago. One of these models with trim and bronze clasps, which was worn 3,000 years ago, is still in the museum of North Ossetia. At that time, the cloak was a cloak like a mantle or penule.

A leather cloak appeared much later. Only in the nineteenth century was the first raincoat with sleeves sewn. By the end of this century, all fashion designers and tailors were creating their own variations on the theme of outerwear, similar to modern. Lightning fastenings made of waterproof fabric began to be popular among fashionistas of those times. Merchants traveled all over Europe in search of those models that the high society would like. The leather coat was also designed to protect against rain and dank wind.

All new and new styles were created by masters. By the beginning of the twentieth century, a cloak could be purchased everywhere. With a yoke on the back, with straps on the sleeves, with a collar and a belt - which models were not on the boutique windows! Functional and convenient thing like military officers. Unpretentious in everyday life, an element of the wardrobe, which is easily washed and does not take up much space, was acquired by men on the road. Travelers chose products made from natural materials. The men's leather cloak was by no means a symbol of wealth and prestige. Leather could be purchased absolutely everywhere for little money.

In the mid-twentieth century, a leather cloak reached the peak of its popularity. We all remember the movie The Night Porter. It is from there that all the brands that are still relevant are taken. A variety of products from black leather and latex began to buy fashionistas and women of fashion in Europe. Both men and women wore a long cloak, the hem of which reached the heels. Closer to the 70s of the 20th century, the fashionable image has changed significantly and has become much simpler. Hollywood divas in trench coats of various materials flaunted on movie screens. Leather raincoats faded into the background and were no longer an example of beauty and style.

But fashion is cyclical - and in the 90s this wardrobe item returned to the shelves. Women born in the Soviet Union first learned what it means to dress in a foreign fashion. They wore jackets and raincoats made of a material that vaguely resembled leather, but was not. Oilcloth products were actively sold out in the markets near the Central Department Store. People could not afford branded things, but they wanted to look stylish. It was for this reason that it was not uncommon to meet at that time a girl on the street in a faux suede jacket , in nubuck boots or in a latex coat. Fortunately now, at the beginning of the XXI century, such products are not fashionable, the demand for them has fallen sharply.
