Its main features are the original drawing (of course, in the style of anime) and the way of reading - from right to left horizontally. To learn about the latest in the world of manga, there are special print publications that publish announcements, one of them is Weekly Shonen Jump. The pages of this magazine first appeared such famous manga as "Naruto", "Van Peace" and others.
About the magazine
Shonen Jump is a once-a-week manga magazine. The publishing house is Shueisha, the magazine first saw the world in 1968 and since then its popularity has only grown. It can be said that this is the oldest publication in the country with an audience of 2.7 million readers. The main target audience - guys aged 12 to 18 years, in fact, this is what the name Shonen comes from. In Japan, the word "shonen" is applied to children over 10 years old and adolescents. But frankly, the magazine is very popular among girls of the same age.
Every week on Monday or Saturday, new chapters of the manga appearing in Japan appear on the pages of Shonen Jump. Many titles published on the pages of the magazine received an anime adaptation.
Historical information
As already mentioned, the magazine saw the world in 1968. Immediately after the release of the first issue, he enters into a fierce struggle with Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday magazines, which also specialize in shonen manga. Shonen Jump has no chance against such competitors, only publishers were not warned about this, so in 1933 the number of subscribers was 6.4 million. Perhaps, now the number of readers has decreased due to the development and popularization of the Internet, but it remains popular both in Japan and abroad.
Create Celebrities
Throughout the history of Shonen Jump, about 70% of mangak became popular thanks to this magazine. To be published on the pages of this publication is considered very honorable for the artist, because more than two million readers can immediately appreciate his work.
Although there was a time when many parent organizations in Japan were outraged by the existence of such a magazine. They believed that such a publication has a negative effect on children. True, things didn’t go beyond words, Shonen Jump and today pleases readers with new works. Such famous artists as Toriyama Akira (“Dragonball”), Oda Eiichiro (“Van Pease”), Masashi Kishimoto (“Naruto”), Amano Akira (“Mafiosi Teacher Reborn”), Tamura Ryuhei (“Beelzepuz”) were printed on its pages. ") other.
World recognition
In Japan, Weekly Shonen Jump is a weekly phenomenon, but in countries near and far abroad it is released only once a month. This is because the readership abroad is not as vast as in Japan, and yet, for more than ten years, Shonen Jump has been gaining a foreign reader:
- In 2003, the first issue of Shonen Jump in the United States was released, the magazine is still popular today.
- From 2001 to 2005 it was published in Germany, in addition to manga, the German version of the magazine published news from the anime world and articles for those who tried to learn Japanese.
- From 2005 to 2007, the magazine could be found in Sweden.
- Since 2005, Shonen Jump began to be released in Norway.
Unfortunately, the magazine is not published in Russia, but this does not mean at all that Weekly Shonen Jump does not exist in Russian. Many domestic fans of anime, manga and everything related to Japan, with manic persistence, look for the original (or American) editions of the magazine, scan pages, translate text and retouch. In a word, Shonen Jump is in Russia, only its lovers publish.
What is connected with the magazine?
In addition to the main Shonen Jump, there are publications associated with it, which appeared quite by accident, but readers liked it very much. For example, Jump Next! - An independent monthly almanac, existing since 2014. On its pages, beginning mangaks can publish their one-shots and even get criticism from professionals.
V Jump existed from 1992 to 1993, covering games and videos on its pages. Super Jump is more of a manga reader, which was published from 1968 to 1988. Jump VS - This magazine specialized exclusively in combat manga. The first publication took place on March 22, 2013.
