A chainsaw is a useful tool for gardening and logging. The effectiveness of its work depends on the degree of wear and sharpness of the cutting elements. Sharpening the chain of chainsaws can be entrusted to a specialist. However, having studied the necessary information on this issue and having practiced a little, a beginner will be able to do this work on his own .
How to determine that the saw needs sharpening?
The working surface of the chainsaw chain consists of two types of links: cutting and limiting teeth. The former have a greater height than the latter. The difference in height is usually always at the same level - 0.5-0.8 mm. When it changes, the sawβs efficiency decreases sharply, it starts to lead to the side. Sawing time increases. The need for sharpening can also be seen in the shape of the remaining chips. Sharp teeth create a uniform chip. Its particles are square in shape. If the links are sharpened, then the shape and size of the particles will be different. Fine dust mixed with shavings resembling needles will begin to pour in from under the chain. Working with such saws becomes not only uncomfortable, but also dangerous. Its continuation can lead to breakdown of the mechanism and personal injury. Therefore, in such cases, sharpening the chain of chainsaws should be immediately organized.
What tools will be needed?
Often professional lumberjacks use machine tools. They are equipped with special circles for sharpening chainsaw chains. An ordinary gardener may well do without buying expensive equipment. The chainsaw sharpening kit includes the following tools:
- flat file
- cylindrical file,
- combination pattern
- vice (this tool will facilitate the work, but without it it is quite possible to do).
Sharpening process
A template is superimposed on the chain so that the direction of the arrows coincides with the chain's motion vector. The angle of the file should be selected for each chain individually, based on its pitch. Sharpening is made with light precise movements towards the tire. Each tooth requires the same number of approaches. The cutting teeth are machined in two. The first is on the one hand, the second is on the other. Sharpening the chain of the chainsaw according to the template eliminates errors and helps to avoid vibration of the saw in the future. A flat file is used for limiter teeth. The template suggests two positions for different tree species: βHβ (hard) for hard, βSβ (soft) for soft.
Saw operation
If you follow the basic rules of use, sharpening the chain of chainsaws will be required much less often, and the device will last much longer. Never forget the lubrication of the mechanism. Oil must always flow onto the surface of the sprocket, chain and guide bar. During operation, it is necessary to monitor how the chain is tensioned. Insufficiency of tension threatens slipping and can pose a serious health hazard. Do not use a dull chain. Its use will lead to excessive load on the saw mechanism and quick wear of parts.
