What is rubber-bitumen mastic?

Rubber-bitumen mastic - a multicomponent mass, a mixture of tar or oil bitumen. As a rule, substances such as fibrous and dusty fillers are used to produce it. Mastic acquires its qualities of heat resistance and hardness due to the absorption of oils on its surface.

The composition of this material includes the following components:

  • rubber;
  • petroleum bitumen;
  • solvents;
  • fillers;
  • plasticizers.

Rubber-bitumen mastic is used to isolate underground and surface structures of steel, structures, pipelines. It is often used in the repair of bathrooms, loggias, when creating wooden structures, swimming pools. Bitumen insulating mastic protects against corrosion. This substance is free of toxic solvents and toluene.

Classification

The material can be characterized by various characteristics. Given the type of bonding elements, there are mastics bitumen, bitumen-rubber, bitumen-
polymer. Depending on the method of use, they emit hot, cold, preheated to a predetermined temperature, not requiring heating, but with an ambient temperature above 5 degrees.

insulating bitumen mastic
The most common differentiation for the intended purpose. Rubber-bitumen mastic is used for various purposes: insulating, gluing, asphalt, anticorrosive.

Application

If you set a goal to glue the rolled materials that will be used for waterproofing or mounted on multilayer roofing, then it is better to use adhesive mastics. But there are some nuances regarding roofing bitumen materials. For example, for bonding rolls of glassine or roofing felt rubber-bitumen mastic is suitable. If the roof is not covered with such a durable material, then tarry versions are used.

In the case when it is necessary to create cast or stucco waterproofing or if an astringent type of material is necessary for the manufacture of plates, it is better to use insulating mastic.

At serious facilities (for example, hydraulic structures) or for pouring waterproofing joints, a hot bitumen-mineral variety is used. It is made from the same bitumen with the addition of a mineral filler. These impurities can be in the composition from 30 to 64% (depending on requirements and conditions).

Work with material

Rubber-bitumen mastic is applied by a mechanized method in several layers. The result should be a total thickness of 10 millimeters. The setting process lasts more than one hour. You can use manual application with a brush or stroke, if there is such a need. If for 48 hours the ambient temperature remains at the level of 20 degrees, then during this period complete drying will occur. If the temperature has an indicator below 15 degrees, then working with this material is extremely undesirable. In a confined space, it is necessary to ensure normal flow ventilation. It is important to observe safety precautions, since hot mastics need to be heated to 180 degrees.
