Knitting braids and harness on knitting needles

Knitting a braid or harness on knitting needles is technically not a very difficult thing. Only care must be taken, because the loops can be thrown from left to right or from right to left, if mixed up, the pattern will go wrong.

In principle, the braid and harness are almost the same thing. Only braids usually call a three-part pattern that looks like a braid, braided from three strands on the hair, and the tourniquet fits into two parts and looks like a rope.

Knitting braids (tow) is performed using an auxiliary knitting needle or pin. To get started, you need to knit several preparatory rows with front and back loops. As you can see, the braids knit on the side of the wrong loops, because they look more prominent. The simplest thing is a braid or a plait of two parts, and all other patterns are built on their basis and knitted according to the same principle.

Option 1. Retraction of loops

Get to the edge of the braid from the front loops. Remove the required number (usually half) of loops on the auxiliary knitting needle, pull back, for knitting, and knit the remaining facial loops. Now take the auxiliary knitting needle and knit the loops on it. Continue knitting.

Option 2. Pulling the loops forward

It is carried out similarly to the first method, only the auxiliary spoke remains in front of the workers.

In both cases, you will get crossed loops. Knitting a braid consists in crossing the loops from right to left or from left to right. If you need the hinges to be crossed from right to left, you take the auxiliary spoke forward, and when it goes from left to right, back. (This is correct if you knit with your right hand. If you can knit with both hands and do not turn the fabric, finishing the next row, then for the left hand everything will be exactly the opposite.)

The next crossing of loops for knitting a braid is done in several rows. Usually everything is indicated on the diagram or in the description of the model.

When you learn the simplest knitting with braids, the patterns will be clearer. In the place where you need to cross the loop, a special designation is made. Now we will discuss how to knit a beautiful scarf with braids.

Inclined lines in the diagram indicate which side the loops should cross. In different sources, the notation will be different, but over time, you will learn to intuitively understand how to make braids according to one or another pattern. You will need to check only to count the rows.

But with us:

1Remove 4 loops and pull forward, knit the next 4. Then 4 removed.
2Remove 5 loops and pull back, knit the next 5. Then 5 removed.
3Remove the first loop on the working knitting needle without knitting. Knit the next two loops and loop the removed loop around them. Skew in the next row.

Crossings of loops do not start from the first row of knitting and usually do not end in the last row either. Therefore, the edges of the scarf will fold a little. Gather them with a needle or make a fringe.

Quite a lot of time is spent on creating a braid. Knitting with lace patterns or front / back loops is much faster. But the harnesses and braids look very beautiful, especially since there are many options. We have now disassembled only the simplest patterns with crossed loops.
