Steel wire - material required in construction

Before proceeding with the description of steel wire, let's figure out what it is. We all saw the wire and we know that its color can be completely different - from bright fiery to light silver. A wire is a long metal cord or thread of different thicknesses. As for the metal from which this material is made, it can be copper, aluminum, steel, titanium, zinc, as well as their alloys. The most common wire is of circular cross section, although it can be square as well as trapezoidal, but much less often.

Types of wires

Due to its excellent physical and operational characteristics, one of the most common types of this material is steel wire. It can be made in several different ways. One of them is cold drawing. The essence of this technology is that a preheated metal billet is pulled (dragged) through a smaller diameter hole. Steel wire is a type of rolling profiles that vary in shape. Depending on the purpose, it can be welding (GOST 2246-70), springy (GOST 9389-75), reinforcing (as a reinforcing element in reinforced concrete construction), etc.

Varieties of Steel Wire

Currently, there are three main categories of steel wire:

  • Low Carbon Steel Wire
  • Alloy wire
  • High alloy wire

The most popular is such a variety as low-carbon steel, in which the carbon content is much lower than in other types of steel. For example, one of the main characteristics of this type of wire is its low sensitivity to elevated temperatures, for example during welding. In addition, we can name a high level of corrosion resistance, flexibility and viscosity. Most often, steel wire made of low-carbon steel is produced with a cross-sectional diameter of 0.2 to 8.0 mm. This material is made by multiple cold drawing.

Appointment of various types of wire

According to the purpose, as mentioned above, steel wire can be classified as follows.

  • Knitting wire. This type of rental is used most often for linking various building envelopes or for the production of nails. This type of wire is also called "trading". It is always made of low carbon steel, and by the nature of the outer coating it can be galvanized and non-galvanized.
  • Vintage wire is usually used for the manufacture of consumer goods. Always made from high carbon steel only.
  • Spring wire, as the name implies, is used for the manufacture of various types of springs by exclusively cold winding. The hardening process is not exposed.

If we consider products made of steel wire, then as examples we can cite the following: springs, nails, screws, rivets, screws, ropes, fittings, obstacles, fences.
