History of the Svir River
The reservoir was always not deep and with multiple rapids, so there was no shipping. With the advent of Soviet power, in about the 30s of the last century, it was decided to create a cascade of hydroelectric power stations. This would make it possible to satisfy the region’s needs for electric energy and create a deep-sea route to enable vessels to pass along the entire length of the river.
As a result, the Nizhne-Svirskaya Hydroelectric Power Station is being built near Ladoga. Not far from Onega, the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydroelectric station was built. As a result of the construction of this station, the Ivinsky spill, or the Verkhne-Svirskoe reservoir, appeared. The pond reaches Lake Onega itself, which raised it to its level.
Both stations are equipped with gateways, which allows the movement of ships in both directions.
Rest on the river
In addition to electric energy, residents and guests of Moscow and St. Petersburg can go on excursions. There are three parking lots throughout the river cruise:
- Svirstroy.
- Lodeynoye field.
- Mandrogs.
From the parking lot of Svirstroy, which is located near Lodeynoye Pole, bus tours to holy places go, namely to the Holy Trinity Alexander Svirsky Monastery. By the way, the temple was erected in 1484 and the relics of Svirsky Alexander are in it.
But the Svir River is famous not only for spiritual sightseeing tours. Vacationers are offered a visit to the Veps Fair. And at the stop of Mandrogi organized the so-called Green Parking. Here, in the village of Upper Mandrogs, an ethnic settlement is organized where you can see the life of the ancient Slavs and try Russian entertainment. Despite the formidable rapids, the village has a place for swimming, the opportunity to ride horses, taste traditional Slavic cuisine, visit the mini zoo and the Russian vodka museum.
And this is not all the entertainment that the river is famous for. This pond is very fond of fishermen.
